Vance Warner won three games; Don Jolley and Mike Nelson each won two games and Elizabeth Carter won one game. That great team effort helped give Lehi the championship. Each victory added to the point total that gave Lehi the victory. Many of the games were timed to the split second. Participants not only had to worry about their opponent, they also had to keep their eyes on the clock. A chess tournament is one of the few times you can get 150 high school students together and have absolute silence; The only noise comes from the tick, tick, ticking of the chess clocks. The tournament started at 8:30 in the morning and didn't finish until around 8 p.m. each night. Coach Jim Howe said the team has been practicing all year long for the state tournament.
