Mr. C, who will be 84 on his next birthday, is still at the head of the class. As a means of keeping his hand, 'er, foot in, Willam Christensen will be teaching a master's class at Utah Regional Ballet. His first appearance at the ballet studio was an auspicious occasion for the youthful dancers. Monday's practice sessions became something of a celebration as Mr. C. watched dancers perform two pieces the ballet is adjuticating for the regional festival. of Dapper and personable, Mr. C, Ballet West and founder of the San Francisco Ballet, has always been interested in Jacqueline P. Colledge and her program. Admitting that h needs a commitment, "he wants to do two things," Jackie said. "He wants to choreograph one more full length ballet, a brand new work, and then he wants to stage one of his previously performed works. "We will premiere the first piece in the fall of '86." Appreciating the discipline and dedication of Utah Regional Ballet dancers, he especially liked "Dimensions," a Jackie Colledge choreographed . piece being prepared for the regional festival to be held in San Jose in late May. "He loved the legato, and thought the piece . showed a lot of promise," Colledge said. Christensen was generous in his praise and complimented the choreography. He was also impressed with the company. "You really have a company. This is not just a group, a carbon copy of another, you have created and developed your own style. You really have a company." Christensen said. The dancers sparkled under the Mr. C's watchful eye. "He has a magic about him that pulls the artistry from dancers in ways they didn't even know they could do. It's amazing' Colledge said. Willam Christensen understands the strivings, the struggling to reach almost unattainable goals of young dancers. He was there once himself. When he wanted to produce his first "Nutcracker," he went asking for funds. He paid for the costumes himself, and he also danced the lead role. His background is steeped in music, dance and appreciation for the fine arts. He even played vaudeville in it's heydey. He started his ballet career in Portland, then went to San Francisco where he founded the famed San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West in Salt and from there he Lake City with Glenn Wallace. door-to-do- He also laid the foundation for the first program arts for dancers at a major university, the University of Utah, and many universities have patterned their programs after his. Although he is still on the board of directors of Ballet West, he is an honorary board member of Utah Regional Ballet, and will continue to lend his expertise to add another dimension to the fledgling company. in fine Utah Regional Ballet does not lack credibility however. The company earned it's wings when, after an exhausting but successful adjutication, was accepted as a member of the prestigious Pacific Regional Ballet. Due to public demand, Utah Regional Ballet's "Cinderella" will be peformed on May 22, 23, 25, 27 and 28 at DeJong Concert Hall at Harris Fine Arts Center on the BYU Campus. - bowling.
