Show Free Press - Wednesday, April 24, 1985 - Page 3 Hardman discusses library success Paula Anderson The headline could read "Local Grandson Makes Good." That's how proud Lehi residents were Friday, when Jason Hardman visited at the Lehi Library and told about his experiences as the nation's youngest librarian. And Lehi calls him their own because his grandparents reside here. Jason is known for starting a library for the citizens of Elsinore four years ago and making it work -even though he was only 11 at the time. He says he did it because he liked to read, was used to having big libraries to check books from - and didn't like to to pedal his bicycle to Monroe six miles away or have someone take him to Richfield for Sharilee Harris Miss Lehi hopefuls The eight contestants who will compete for the title of Miss Lehi are engaged in their own personal countdown as pageant time is just 17 days, eight hours, 30 minutes and a few seconds away from curtain call. The Miss Lehi Scholarship Pageant will be held May 4, in the Lehi High School Auditorium. Taunya Wilson and her committee details are checking before the curtain goes up on one of Lehi's loveliest events. Many hours of work are spent preparing for the annual pageant, and many enthusiastic Lehi citizens are looking forward to the selection of the 1985-8- 6 royalty. "City officials wouldn't give me any support because they didn't think I would stick with it," he recalls. But after hounding the Mayor and saying he would call the councilmen every day until they agreed to it, he got a room for his library in the basement of an old school house (now the Elsinore city offices ) . He and family members had to clean it up. He was able to get some old carpet pieces to help warm the floor and an oil heater to make it comfortable. He contacted Elsinore residents to donate books and he was in business. Although it all took time - and wasn't as easy as it may sound - it' was an experience for not only him but his whole family -- an experience that led him to an interview on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon, "Donahue," and "Good Morning America." (In answer to questions, he said both Johnny Carson and Phil Donahue were very nice ) He has also been heard on several radio talk shows, including one in Guam and will be on Japanese television. He noted people calling his home often don't think of the time difference - and the call from Guam came about midnight, for instance. In 1982 he was called to testify at a congressional hearing about the need for libraries in rural America -the youngest person in history to ever be called - he was 12 years old. And he has had the opportunity to meet with President Reagan. "He gave me a large bowl filled with jelly beans," Jason said. ( He had another call just Friday to come back to Washington but his mother said she doubted he would make this one). He also visited the Library of Congress, the National Agricultural Library, the National Archives and the Smithsonian Institute. He was also written up in the Readers Digest, not only in the United States edition, but also in editions that went to Saudia Arabia and India that he knows of. He has also appeared before the Utah State Legislature, met with former Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson and says his biggest award has been an award from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge. He also spoke to the students at Meadow Elementary School in Lehi in January. After his appearances on national television and the story in the Readers Digest, he received books from not only the United States, but also from Germany and elsewhere. In fact, he now has almost as many books as they have in the Lehi library, librarians noted. He said the City Council has given him a second room in order for him to have more rooms for his books. He says he has "a good selection a little bit of just about (of books) - everything" including several sets of encyclopedias, research books, romance, children's mysteries, books, biographies, etc. His hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and his patrons are of all ages. When he isn't there for some reason, he has someone take over for him He doesn't have a card check out system or the Dewey Decimal System - instead he writes down the name of the individual taking out the books - and checks them off when they bring the books back in. "We're just starting to put cards in the backs of the books now," he said. "We've come a long way in just four years," he said, quipping "I think it has been a success because it's very hard for grownups to say no to a kid; lots of people want to read; and being only 11, I didn't know the thousands of reasons adults think of of why I couldn't doit." Does he plan to be a librarian when he gets out of school? "Right now, I doubt it - I'm planning on going .into Computer Science." He says the City has agreed to take over the library when he goes away to college.
