Show Citizen, Press, Review, VVd., April 3, 1985 - Page 4 Cancer film tells local woman's story "Triumph Over Cancer - The Rae Jean York Story," a film of hope, faith - and more hope - is tentatively scheduled for release in April, according to Craig and Mary of Kesler SunriseProductions, producers of the film . David K. Jacobs, noted Utah director, is directing the TV movie which tells the story of Highland resident, Rae Jean York. Written in narrative form, the movie tells the story of how Mrs. York, when but 16, overcame a particularly virulent form of cancer - winning over death against all medical data and prognosis. On the threshold of life when she contracted the disease, she "made the best of each day, taking pleasure in the little things," says the Keslers, producers of the film. "Her zest for living was a joy to all who knew her." "Mrs. York lived to become an inspiration to others of similar and disimilar afflictions and she - her life past and present become an ensign of hope to hundreds, even thousands, of people. The true story of Rae Jean York who, by the fact that she is alive and "alive" in the total sense of the word, helps others daily to face their inevitable death by living each day to its fullest, filled with the ultimate commodity that cannot be obtained by prescription - hope, faith, and more hope, they continued. Mr. Jacobs explained the film is made in a fireside mode - with Mrs. York and friends and relatives who were with her during her 1951 illness recalling events. Among them are Arch Pulham, who was her LDS bishop at the time; Arthur B. Henderson, her father; Sharon Nelson, daughter of Provo Doctor James Webster who was her doctor; Bernie Henderson, her husband brother; her aunts; RaeDell York; and her children Steve and Paula. Fifteen-year-ol- d Carrie Kesler portrays young Rae Jean in flashbacks to the event, with Brent Halladay portraying her father. The story begins Rae Jearfs happily finding she is pregnant in the fall, concludes in the spring when she begins regaining her health. It includes the discovery of the Mole cancer Hydatidiform Chorioneoithelioma - in her female organs, its entry into her liver and its race along her blood stream and into other parts of her body. There is the recalling of four operations and other treatment she underwent - and the spontaneous regression of the disease - the only recorded case of the recovery from the disease at the time. "No one had ever escaped its ravaging effects before," Mrs. York says. "I weighed about 72 pounds - my legs wouldn't hold me up," she recalls. "It took about a year for my body to become stabilizing itself." The film was made in locations in Provo, Orem, American Fork Canyon, Highland, American Fork and Lehi. Mr. Jacobs, the producer of "Uncle Ben" which was made in American Fork, "The Mailbox," an award winning film and many others, says "Triumph Over Cancer" is "a wonderful story. It holds out, a lot of hope for people with cancer and other diseases. "Rae Jean told us by her actions how to live life fully, and her story has a happy ending. The video will hold out hope and encouragement to people who are faced with a tremendous problem. "It shows how this little girl - just 16 - copes and encourages people not to give up but to make the best of each day no matter how long or how strong they need to be. "That's the secret - to make the best of each day - look for the first buds of spring, the sight of quail feeding in the yard, the beauty of the moonlight on the snow - to take pleasure in the little things," Mr. Jacobs said. -- mmr&L, Jm I ' lw make-u- p j" .. . on for Carrie - rjiiwiniini urn i m i film scene from "Triumph Over Cancer Cameramen the Rae Jean York Story."
