Jim Howe is coaching Lehi's chess team, and the state tourney was directed by the United States Chess Federation. Tournament rules are strict and the' competition is very intense. There is absolute silence in the room. There can be no kibitzing. They play by time clocks. Every move is timed to the second and games are occasionally won and lost on time. Each player is allowed one and a half hours to make all his moves in the game. "You can lose . by one second," Howe explained. "There is a clock sitting right next to the players, tick, tick, ticking away," Howe said. "It's a game that takes immense amounts of concentration, analysis and logical thinking." There were 114 players from various high schools across the state in the tournament. Absolute silence prevails in the tourney area. Clocks are ticking; for the players it's a pressure cooker. For the coach it's a wonderful laid back feeling. "It's great to relax and watch young minds Howe in total concentration," stated. Swim team begins practice The Lehi Swim team, under the direction of Coach Ted Hutchinson, is in full swing for their workouts. The team members meet each Saturday morning at the American Fork City Pool. There are 60 swimmers and they are divided into teams according to age. The team could use more members of high school age and also needs a few more boys. Coach Hutchinson is pleased at the response and of the enthusiasm of all the team members. Prospective swimmers should be pre-seas- and gave Ted good instruction. For 10 years, Hutchinson was on the AAU Team, and then became an assistant coach for the USA team. "The USA team is for serious swimmers, and we have a couple of kids that could qualify," he stated. After the family moved to Alpine, Ted helped his brother coach the American Fork Swim Team. He was also attending BYU majoring in electrical engineering. The IDS Church called Ted to serve a mission in Arizona. When he returned, he continued his studies at BYU. He met a young lady from able to swim 50 meters, but as Hutchinson says, "I've had to give a crash course in swimming lessons in three minutes or less! " The Lehi coach is new to Lehi but not to coaching. Last year, he was the assistant coach for the American Fork Swim Team. "I really do enjoy the Lehi team. I like all the kids. They are good to do as I say. I haven't learned all their names yet, but I will." Coach Ted Hutchinson grew up in Hacienda Heights (Orange County) California, where he swam every day. His neighbor was a swim coach Texas, and they plan to be married next week. As soon as the team finishes their workouts, they will begin practice with the clock. Valley play-off- s begin in July, and Coach Hutchinson hopes to have a championship team. pre-seas- SNAPPER SENSATIONAL roiioinnn UJ LLrviUUVJ FREE ATTACHMENT WORTH UP TO '61.95 s NO MONTHLY PAYMENTS FOQ 90 DAYG Save now when you purchase a SNAPPER mower at regular retail price.
