Since the article deals with events that took place recently in Lehi, we felt the article would be of interest to our readers. Here is the column, reprinted with the permission of the Richfield Reaper. Sometimes I wonder just whom we are to believe? What we're supposed to do. We hear the pleas to "get involved,' "Be a concerned citizen," "Do your share," and yet, when people do become involved, idiots. Last weekend I was with part of the family at a hamburger joint in Lehi, Utah. We had just ordmd when a lady came running in yelling "Write this down," and then rattled oft a license plate numlier. She ran behind the counter, asked for the phone, and called the ltcal police station. I looked out the window and saw what had caused her consternation. Two men in a small car were pulling out of the parking spot with two young boys in the back seat frantically struggling to Tax nt percent being distributed ' to other communities in the state. The figures in the report are estimates for 1984 only and are subject to change in subsequent years. The study concludes by noting that a large number of the cities that derive little or nothing from the sales tax increase choose not to raise their sales tax rates and accept the new method of distribution, it could substantially reduce the amount of revenue that would be distributed to other communities. This would tend to destroy one of the basic purposes of the new law which is to redistribute some of the revenue generated by communities with large commercial interests to if the communities with large populations. I'm sorry 6he felt that her concern wasn't taken seriously by our officer." The officer who received the call drove to the cafe and talked to the man involved in the incident. The man said that his son was walking on Main Street when two boys came out of the drug store, spit on the sidewalk, when the young man complained the boys deliberately spit on him. The boy returned home and told his father what had happened. The angry father went to the cafe, forced the two offenders into his car and asked them to show him where they lived. The boys showed the man where their home was, a distance of about two blocks away, and they were then taken back to the cafe and released unharmed. The boys jumped on their bicvcles and rode awav. After the officer heard the man's explanation, he talked to the lady the alleged who'd reported kidnapping, then left to answer an another call concerning accident that he'd received immediately after the citizen's call from the cafe. As he drove away he looked through his rear view rnirror and saw the woman writing down his car's license number. "I knew there was going to be a problem so I called dispatch and told them I'd be a few minutes late and quotations!!!) had demanded the boys' names and addresses, or taken their parents' names, and then contacted them, and let the parents give the kids the proper posterior paddling, that would have sufficed. But these men felt it was within their right to knock these kids around and shove them into their car against their will. Just before the police arrived the small car pulled up and the two boys jumped out and ran for their bikes. It would be nice if that was where the story ended. The boys were O.K., and went on their bikes "safe and sound." Unfortunately, there's more to it. The two men from the car came into the drive-itrying to defend their actions. A gentleman who was eating lunch kept the two at the door in conversation until the policeman arrived. The officer then listened to both sides of the story. The lady told hers a concerned citizen witnessing two young boys being hauled off, against their will, in a vehicle by people they didn't know. The man told his side the two boys had spit on his kid and he wanted to n to the accident, then turned around and went back to the cafe. I went in and explained to the woman my feelings about the incident I knew the man and I didn't think he should be arrested for kidnapping. If the same thing happened to my son, I'd probably have reacted in much the same way as this father did. I thanked the lady for the call and left again. I was anxious to answer the second call and saw no rnjon for further delay in doing so. The increased revenue received by some communities will be substantially more than the added tax imposed by that community. However, a number of cities would derive absolutely no additional revenue from the tax increase. Other cities would receive less revenue than the amount of the added tax imposed. For example, the percent added tax in Salt Lake City would produce about $2,978,000 during 1984. The city would receive only about $160,000 which is only about 5.4 percent of the amount of tax increase. The remaining 94.6 Rhonda get out of the car. "Kidnap!" I immediately thought.
