Show Free Press - Thursday, April 28. 1983 - Page 2 Public support will help make Lakers a success Public fooled " :. ; When Provo City decided it had too much going this summer to accommodate a professional baseball team, it gave American Fork an opportunity to become the hometown and a chance for local for the American Fork Lakers favorite sport. residents to enjoy America's all-tiAnd although American Fork's City Fathers have yet to ink a definite agreement to pave the way for the city's first professional baseball team, it appears to be well on it's way with a vote of confidence from the city council members. A press conference identified American Fork as the home of one of the four teams in the newly-forme- d Rocky Mountain Professional Baseball League somewhat prematurely as far as the city was concerned, since the council had not had the chance to approve the agreements for the team to play in the city. But team owners and league promoters are anxious to get tryout camps scheduled and team rosters finalized in time to start league play during the first two weeks in June. And they are confident that the league will be a success. While it's true that the Lakers and the three other teams in the newly-forme- d league are billing themselves as Class A two steps below the class AAA Gulls in Salt Lake teams the founders of the league are adamant about their City intentions of bringing to American Fork, Tooele, Ogden and Carbon County professional-clas- s baseball. And while they are also intent on giving local players an one tryout camp will be geared opportunity to play ball to local hopefuls exclusively they also stress that to make the team, a potential player will have to exhibit the qualities that will help him be successful in professional ball. It's still uncertain whether the league will be successful. teams have been tried Similar experiments with and failed. But league promoters say short travel distances and the interest in Utah in baseball favor the new league, and they are looking forward to expansion into Idaho with four more teams next year. The individuals involved are also experienced. Denny Job, who will own the Lakers, is the former manager of the Ogden A's. Other participants have similar experience and interest in the sport of baseball. However, once league play get underway, it will be up the residents of American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lehi and other surrounding towns to determine whether the experiment is a success. We believe the Lakers and the Rocky Mountain Professional Baseball League deserve the support of the surrounding communities, and that they can be an assett to north Utah County. With a successful year, the league will grow, the competition will improve, and residents will have within easy reach the kind of entertainment that has kept America captive for over 100 years. non-align- ed Editor The public is easily fooled Now is the time to buy shovels while they are cheap. You go into any hardware store to buy a shovel handle and you will pay about six or seven dollars for a handle Then the store clerk will tell you that you would be better off if you buy a shovel with the handle already in it It will only cost you a dollar or two dollars more for both. . On the other hand if people started breaking their shovels, then the price of the shovels would go up so you can't win for losing. The public is easily deceived. Joseph M. The educational establishment takes it on the chin more and more these days as evidence mounts that the schools are falling down on the job. Even test results despite the fact that many observers suspect they are strongly loaded in favor of the schools continue to show declines in scores by students. Under such circumstances, it is not surprising that there is a national outcry of "What can't Johnny read, write or spell?" It must be granted, however, that in some ways perhaps things haven't changed all that much. There is evidence that, judging by some of today's adults, neither did the schools of yesterday always do unusually low. GIBBS Chief of Police It appears that with the advent of Spring, we are not only blessed with the beauties it brings, but also have to contend with some unscrupulous individuals who take of our citizens, advantage especially the elderly. We are aware of at least two instances where individuals have been contacted by a company using the name AA Asphalt, 2004 South 8th East, Salt Lake City, Utah, phone agreeing to do work at a reduced rate then bill for 2 or 3 times the amount quoted. Attempts to contact them reveal that they use an answering service which appears to know little about them. So far they have not bothered to answer my calls. In order to protect yourselves when someone offers a "Good Deal", ask to see their City License, if they do not provide one, then think twice about doing business with them. If you do this and call us with the information obtained, you will be helping us do our job of protecting you. -- -- -- 584-218- 8, -- -- end. ; 00 . sOftfJflf Wff 'for. 4?(0t litlt.
