Show Lehi Frr Press - August 5. 1982 - Page 2 The Lehi Connection Famous Youth Has Roots In Lehi JASON IIARDMAN is the grandson of Francis and Luella Grace and Mrs. Dee (Patsy) Hardman of Lehi. He has recently received national media attention for getting a library in his home town of Elsinore. totn Set sAy ,JJie((y Following the terrible accident in France that took the lives of 53 children, a newspaper quoted one of the victim's mothers saying, "Where has God been the last ten hours? " Commenting on that quote, Kay Cox said, "Those busses were racing each other, traveling over 80 miles an hour on a rain slick highway and they say 'Where's God been the last ten hours!" We were discussing that accident with Bruce and Virgie who are visiting in Lehi from their home in Los Altos, California. They had spent several weeks in France and couldn't believe how motorists observe rules. "Do you know how they tell who has the Virgie asked. 'It's the car with the lights on " She went on to say that tourists usually do not drive after dark in Paris. "I can't believe the way they drive over there. It's a frightening experience. Many people are killed on the highways there." right-of-way- ! We have our problems here in the good old America, but highway travel is relatively safe. We are trying to curb drunk driving here in the U.S., and with heavier penalties we'll probably succeed in cutting down accidents caused by drunk drivers, at least they're trying to do something at long last. can't imagine two grown men, with the lives of beautiful little children placed in their hands, being I so callous and uncaring as to drive over 80 miles an hour, let alone on a rain swept highway, let alone racing each other! ' The lad and bis parents stop in Lehi coming from and going to these memorable appearances. They stopped last Tuesday, and they also visited on their way back from Washington. Grandma Hardman likes to spend time in Elsinore, too. When asked if Jason had changed since all the publicity Grandman says, "He acts like it's an everyday occurrence. He's d not at all. He's just intelligent." Following Jason's meeting in Washington D.C. he received 1500 books from the congressional library and 250 special books from Congressman Jim Hansen. "Jason was Congressman Hansen's guest while he was back there. So were his mom and dad," the proud grandmother said. Jason met the Joint Congressional Committee formed to investigate the future needs of rural America. He talk before these gave a national leaders followed by a private tour of the U.S. White House, a visit arranged by U.S.Senator Jake Gam. Since Jason opened the library about a year ago and because of the ensuing publicity, about 5,000 books have been added to the library shelves and tables. The library is open two days a week unless the jean-da- d librarian is out of town. According to Mrs. Hardman, Jason is not the only important one in Wayne and Linda's family. He has a brother Nathan, 14, who plays the piano and loves athletics. The grandparents are also very proud of Corinne, 18, Jason's pretty brunette sister. "She's sports minded and played basketball, volleyball on South Sevier's girls teams. She also coached seventh grade softball," bragged Patsy. "She is a talented singer, she plays the piano and loves drama. She played a lead role in 'Sound of Music' She got a scholarship and will attend Dixie College this fall." Perhaps Jason's inclination to red is inherited. His Uncle Tony will graduate from BYU in December with a master's degree in library A group of Lehi folks are especially interested whenever the name Jason Hardman is mentioned. And the name has been much in the news lately. Jason Hardman, the son of Wayne and Linda Hardman of Elsinore. Utah, is also the grandson of Francis and Lufella Grace and Mrs. 1 Dee (Patsy) Hardman of Lehi s the hit national Jason has headlines and media because all he did was put together a town library from scratch. He told a joint congressional committee that he got sick of peddling his bike several miles from Elsinore to Monroe, to check out books at the library there. According to his grandmother, Jason loves to read. While many boys his age are playing baseball or swimming, Jason has his nose in a book. "He loves to read. Oh, he's a mischievous kid, but he doesn't care too much for sports," Patsy smiled. Jason and his family got permission to use the basement of Elsinore 's school, (which is now used for city offices) scrubbed and painted the walls and laid donated carpet remnants after cleaning the floor. Jason and his dad, Wayne, a retired military officer who's now an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance in Richfield, built the shelves. When Jason began getting publicity on his venture in the book world, the Associated Press ran a story about the young lad on an international basis. Through that story, which originally began in his local paper, books have come from throughout the United States. The news gained the interest of Steve Allen, a prolific writer of some 25 books, and known for his stage and television performances. He sent an autographed copy of one of his books. Calls came from "Real People," asking if Jason could appear on their show. Other calls came from California, New York and Colorado with one of the most important from Johnny Carson TV Show, where Jason will appear tonight Now, that's criminal. And, I'm sure you've heard of other hair raising traffic tie ups in Europe. There have been so many heartrending stories in the news lately.
