MARJORIE DAVIS costume director of Utah Pageant of the Arts, at work on one of the 84 costumes for the 1981 production. Tittinsor Card of by One of the most demanding and creative staff positions with Utah Pageant of the Arts is that of costume designer. If you thought making a formal for your daughter's junior prom was a big project, how about designing and creating 84 costumes for a unique theatrical production such as Utah Pageant of the Arts? Marjorie Davis, of American Fork, is the costume designer for the Pageant and was a professional seamstress for many years before she became involved as a volunteer with the Pageant. In addition to sewing for her daughters, she had made wedding gowns and other items of wearing apparel for an enthusiastic clientele. Since the 1976 Pageant season, Mrs. Davis has faced the challenge of designing and constructing the many costumes required for this production. Most of the earlier costumes were made from unbleached muslin, which was then painted with scenery paint to achieve the look needed for the cast members to portray the persons in the respective art pieces. Mrs. Davis still uses five full bolts of muslin, each containing 30 yards, for a single Pageant season. However, as new materials are discovered, she utilized them in her wardrobe designs and many new costumes are made to replace those worn in earlier performances. She has used a new metallic vinyl for costumes in such scenes as "The Scythian Comb," for the three cast members. Last season the cast member in "Angel Moroni" also wore a costume of this same gleaming material. She also used giana cloth for draping the costumes in both "Apollo and the Nine Muses" and "Wedgwood Buckles." Mrs. Davis and members of her staff, Carol Thornton, Helen Wakefield, Debbie Hanson, Leah Hanson and Diane Felt, are working at the Pageant each night of the five week run, helping cast members into costumes, adjusting costumes for the three cast members who will use the costume during the run and making minor repairs. Each costume is examined each night and if repairs are needed, they are made immediately. Some costumes suffer makeup damage and are washed, then repainted and most costumes barely last one season. All cast members are costumed, with body suits required for statuary pieces.
