Steps leading into buildings present a real problem to in persons wheelchairs, verbal instructions present problems for severely hearing impaired or deaf people, and visually impaired cannot see the visual street light and other visual directions. Many are unpeople comfortable around handicapped people because they, along with the majority of the in the population have vast country, misconceptions and negative stereotyping of the disabled. Through Architectural Barriers study, Handicapped Awareness is working to educate the public to the problems these barriers present to people in wheelchairs, and it is hoped this will gradually remove many of these barriers. Our speakers bureau is trying to do the same thing with attitudes by presenting the handicapped as a valuable resource that can be mobilized to not only but help themselves, other handicapped and society as a whole. Handicapped citizens Awareness is working to improve the life style of handicapped citizens by encouraging their participation in recreational and social activities. Will Dredge is recreation director, and has planned many activities which have ranged from plays at BYU, the Circus at the Salt Palace and many others. To continue these programs requires funding. For a few years Curt Brinkham and Mike both double Johnson, amputees, held a marathon race around Utah Lake and raised the funds to help purchase our Handybus-eaiiippe- dV with.;' a wHeeWhair lift. Now we are faced with the problem of finding funds to run it. Funding has been cut not only in our program, longer able to get to work, to doctors, or go shopping. Once again their lives are one of isolation. They remain homebound and for the most part forgotten members of society. Striving to bridge the gap created from lack of funding, we have contacted area artists and put together a very nice art exhibit and auction. We lacked the funds to rent space to hang the work. The Elks club donated the space. The auctioneer, Neil Scott, has donated his time and talents for this event. We have had excellent support from the Elks lodge and Elks members, but we also need public support and would encourage all interested in handicapped citizens and the work of local artists to come out and support this work auction. Many of our local Utah County artists show their work exclusively out of Utah and we feel this auction provides a chance for area art patrons to see their work and purchase it if they desire. Many people have expressed their concern that this exhibit is on Sunday. We as staff members also feel bad about this, but this is the only day we could include the public, since the Elks lodge is a private Weekends.
