Show COMET TIMES - MARCH 15, 1997 - 5 MORE ATLAS UPDAT E, from p. 1 Celebrating Dad Many of you may remember my father, Sherman Christensen, from his occasional visits here—at an open house for him, or a town Easter party, or an anniversary celebration. He was the pleasant elderly man with ajaunty demeanor and a camera It's been just six months since he died at 91. He understood why I wanted to live here, and during his short visits always joined in with relish, whether it was driving over the LaSal Loop, finding true north by the stars, hearing meadowlarks again, assaulting my outrageous _ driveway with a shovel, or renewing his love for the desert (his first real job in his teens was with the US geologic survey in the Book Cliffs). I've observed his love of the law all my life, and listened with satisfaction last week while he was honored by colleagues as founder of the American Inns of Court, a fast-growing American movement which is already improving the quality ofjustice from within the legal profession. Along with his work life, he maintained a delicious childlike quality, and added his own brand of pestiness and zest to any adventure. He grew to accept and acknowledge me as I am, giving up his old ideas of who I should be, and that is whatI appreciate most—the gigantic shift which allowed us to be friends. As I am and you are, he was a mixture of balance and species in that stretch of the Colorado River. But this is not expected to change the NRC decision. Senator Orin Hatch had supported moving the tailings pile, but seems to now be favoring the capping in place alternative. It was felt that the next step should be to have a large demonstration Memorial Day weekend to attract national TV/media coverage. So far the millions of people downstream have not been made aware of the potential consequences of the capping in place alternative. With large populations using the Colorado River water for irrigating and drinldng, the effects of a major failure of the tailings pile could be catastrophic. Several other approaches to getting more national media coverage were discussed. One person was working on getting 60 Minutes to do a segment of the program on the Atlas tailings pile situation. Last year efforts by Castle Valley residents and property owners helped convince Atlas Corp. that Round Mountain would not be a “politically” advisable quarrying site from which to obtain the rock to cap the existing tailings pile in place. Both letter writing and speaking at the public hearing ' were effective. At the Monday meeting, it was felt that some other approach has to be used at this time. interested, outgoing, courtly, confident, poetic, controlling, wise, friendly, exuberant, impetuous, fun loving, thorough, If anyone has any ideas about other strategies to use this . time or if you have any ideas for an effective protest demon— stration, please come to the next meeting and share your romantic, vital, spiffy, honorable, charismatic, prissy, ideas. eccentricity.
