Show 10 - SUNNY TIMES - MARCH 1994 — Letters to the Times (This letter arrived as we were going to press last month. CC) Even though I’m sunning in the “Land of Eternal Rainbows,” news from home prompts comment. First, I’m disappointed to read of Jane Tuft’s resignation. It’s embarrassing, to us as a community, that a large majority of people elect who they believe will be a competent and effective representative, then a small unforgiving minority make it virtually impossible for her to fulfill her job. I, along with many others, express gratitude to Jane for having served our valley so well. Thank you. Bill Riggs, even though a friend and neighbor I like very much, does not represent the voting block that voted for Jane. We were sold out, gang. Second, here in Hawaii there are two species of wild animals, cats and chickens. They are abundant and run free in cane fields and undergrowth. I and, more important, morally. Accidental though it was, their parents and we as grandparents were shocked and upset, as both boys have had training in use and respect of guns, and surely should have known and not acted so carelessly. They have been punished, are still being restricted, and are having to pay monetarily for their mistake (one boy works in the lunchroom for spending money—obviously now spent for several months). The 15th and 16th years are difficult—so near to grown up and still so far away. We in no way excuse their behavior. It was careless and foolish. And we do appreciate Joan’s allowing them to make recompense. They owe her more than money and Joan did not deserve what happened. The hidden value is that perhaps the boys have learned more responsibility to save them problems later in life. We have been directly or indirectly connected with this valley since it was subdivided. We have loved the unity you love them which love you what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do the same? " And verse 44 says to "love your enemies, do good to them that hate you." Mind you, I do not consider Joan an enemy, nor do I feel we hate each other. I hope she has respect for me as I do for her—we just don’t often agree on community views. But as valley citizens we are letting differences of opinions make enemies. How very, very sad. —Gwen Martineau I would like to thank the MANY contributors to the recent ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION FUND DRIVE. if you were not contacted, you can still send your donation directly can verify that even in the tropics, chickens awake at 4 am. Chickens are nature’s way of saying “Get up, see the glorious colors of sunrise, a new day is dawning.” I’m reminded of a song from my beliefs or life styles.
