As writer of the article and editor of the newspaper, I realize there are some very great dangers to home, midwife deliveries. They may not show up statistically, but they show up in reality. A close friend of mine went the home birth route. The baby died, and the mother is barren. She has been going to a psychiatrist now for many years trying to overcome her guilt feelings. But, at the same time, I think every parent can see some truth in Mrs. Block's comments about the "mass production" which occurs at most hospitals. My wife, I hope, will never have to give birth at home. But Mrs. Block has made me wonder whether hospitals should not make use of midwives. I see no reason why doctors have to deliver babies. But I do believe babies should be delivered in hospitals with doctors and emergency equipment available. However, you have cancelled your subscription because you don't believe we should allow a midwife to have her say, even though in letters I invited you or any of your colleagues to her claims to pieces if you are able. You have the and tear respond last rebuttal. You have readers anxiously awaitof having advantage ing to see how you will respond. But instead of refuting Mrs. Block's claims, you cancel your subscription. You take your ball and bat and go home in a pout because the other team made a hit. Are you going to let them win by forfeit? Allow me to clarify my position on this and on other issues of a controversial nature. Unless you read it in this column, you will probably be prone to great error in evaluating my opinions. Most editors and publishers of weekly newspapers quietly ignore those with whom they disagree. I often blare their opinions across my treatment of only one front page. Often my articles are an I viewpoint, but am elated to have someone representing the opposite point of view respond in the following issue. bold-face- d Congressman Gunn McKay last week voted to adopt the Panama Canal Implementing Legislation - the bill that could cost Americans between (2 and $4 billion to turn the canal over to the Republic of Panama.
