Then, it's back to the campus for the fall semester and such subjects as foods and nutrition, judging, fitting and showing, farm crops, feedlot operations and ranch construction. In the fall the students take part in a cattle roundup-n- ot as spectators but as participants as part of a five-da- y internship. There are classes on campus on anatomy and physiology, full-fledg- business communication, feedlot management, marketing, breeding, accounts and welding. The students, during the program, also negotiate a loan at the bank and purchase some feeder steers. The students care for the steers from start to finish. The steers are then sold and slaughtered and the students then learn about the beef carcass, inside and out. "We have outstanding students currently enrolled in the program and others will come next fall," Gibbs said. "We want them to learn all they can about beef production management so they can become businessmen successful and businesswomen after they leave Ricks. I have been to a lot of viewings of a lot of people whom I have known at different mortuarys. As yet I have never sen a mortician who could make a corpse look more life like than Ralph Wing. He really does a good job and I would like him to know that is exactly the way I feel. Signed, Joseph M. Talk about an heirloom.... But, Mae and Emma said they would be insulted if I didn't use it. I may put it on my bed, but woe to anyone who sits on it, cries on it, or rumples it. You know, you'll never see those girls when they aren't cooking or quilting. They are truly artists at both pasttimes. You'd think a few of their homemaking skills would have rubbed off on me. I lived by them as a bride and for many years afterward. Gosh, Edith even helped born my children. But the magic didn't happen. My neighbors just became more clever and creative and all I can do is admire their artistry. Anyway, Provo, Utah 84601 1 Aren't we proud of the Lehi girls who won the district Make It With Wool Contest. Just think, the three top winners were from Lehi. And, to cap the climax, honorable mention winners were also from our fair city. The tailoring on their outfits is almost unbelievable. Plaids are matched, buttonholes are tailored, seams are finished perfectly and top stitching is even and smooth. The linings of the jackets, vests, skirts and pants don't sag, bag or droop. Most the judging points concern how the outfit looks on the girl, and the girl herself. Our girls were beauties. Ingrid Hansen, Connie Bateman and Sandy Nielsen will go to the state contest January 5 and they'll have a good chance to bring home the honors. The fashion show will be held at Hotel Utah at 7 p.m. Good luck girls. Speaking of Talent One of my nicest Christmas gifts was an afghan made especially for me by the clever hands of Pearl Peterson. Now, I can curl up in the warm pink afghan on cold evenings, read my Christmas books, and sip a cup of hot cocoa. Sheer contentment. Another wonderful surprise was the completion of a keepsake quilt by Emma Johnson and Mae Daly. I'd always wanted a quilt made by my wonderful friends, "The Strasburg Girls," and I had expressed that desire one time in the presence of Mae. Lo and behold, just before Christmas here they came with "The Quilt."
