Show THE LFHI FREE PRESS THURSDAY. Dec 15. 1977 Ico Stating Rink Opens At Utah Lake The ice skating rink at Utah mwBhJimtem, 11; Pioneers Down No. Sanpete, Lose Squeaker to Tooele e The Pioneers split a series last weekend, winning big over 2A North Sanpete, but losing to 3A rival flooele in a squeaker on Saturday night. Lehi played almost the same during the two games, the diference being the inability to hit the crucial field goals. Turnovers played a major part in both games. Errant passes and traveling seemed to plague the Pioneers in their endeavors to keep their wintwo-gam- intact. Forning tunately, the other teams also commited errors, adding a certain thrill to the games. season Lehi 75 No. Sanpete 60 The North Sanpete game started much like their earlier ones, the exception being that the Pioneers controlled the game much better than before, and had built up a healthy lead Bruce 1 by halftime. Tuckett who has played a major part in the Lehi effort this year, continued to command the Pioneers offensive game, setting up five assists during the half. Bruce cerk tainly deserved the by his efforts the previous week, and he certainly improved, if that's possible during this game. Many of his assists went to Larry Cardon, who had one of the best games of his career, scoring a total of 21 points during the game. 12 of them came during the second quarter as a result of Tuckett's work. Larry had the touch, and did some really pretty plays. Dennis Carlton pulled down 19 rebounds and scored 16 points, well above his average play. It' should be a good year for the talented forward. Bart Manning also had one of his best games, scoring 13 points, but adding a little spark to things when needed. North Sanpete was a bunch, hitting 50 the field. But the from percent Pioneer defense was also strong, and managed to keep the scoring opportunities away from the team from Mt. 43-3- player-of-the-wee- Pleasant. The the Pioneers a 75-6- win gave 0 3-- 0 win-los- s record, and were proving to be more than was expected. Tooele 69 Lehi 63 Tooele came to the Pioneer gym the next night, and really gave the crowd a show. The Buffs starting lineup was exceptionally strong, but foul trouble hit them early in the game. The Buffs who came off the bench were tougher than those they replaced. Only two of the original five proved to be any threat, but with the replacements proved to be too much in the long run. It was a topsy-turv- y game, and could have either gone way throughout the entire time. Bruce Tuckett again had an excellent game, but this time the strength came from his shooting, going 1 from the field. Foul trouble kept him out of the game at times, but the real picture could be seen in his shooting. Assists were rare in the game, due mainly to the tight Tooele defense. The first g half was really a time. Both teams committed 20 turnovers apiece during the first half, and you don't score points when the ball is being constantly changed. Fouling was also a problem, resulting in many trips to the foul line, mostly coming in the second half. Probably the most upsetting thing was the inability to get the field goals from outside. Tuckett got four buckets the first quarter, with one more basket being scored by only one other person on the ' Lehi squad. Dennis Carlton suffered a twisted ankle early in the game, and the resulting may lag in his shooting have been from that source. He still managed to pull in 17 rebounds, but couldn't find the baskets. It took a lot of time to get the offense rolling, and by the time it did get going, it was almost too late. Late in the final period, Chris Geyerman and Bart Manning took over from (4-1- winning teams from each stake competed in a friendly tournament. In the Beehive Division the Lehi Stake won, but the senior division was won by the team from the North Stake. In each stake over 100 girls participated in the program, which was under the direction of Jennifer Jacobsen in the Lehi Stake and Mary Pinkham in the North Stake. The Fourth Ward Team was coached by Kathy Rhodes and ended regulation play with a 0 record, the only team to finish undefeated. In the Lehi Stake the Beehive division was won by the Tenth Ward, under the direction of Katie Ingle, with a 1 record. The senior division was won by the Second Ward with a 3 record. This team is coached by Julie Wing. According to the stake sports specialists from both stakes 5-- Geyerman scored nine of his 11 points also during the fourth quarter. It went right down to the wire, with the battle height fought at the freethrow line, due to the fouling duels going r on. Some of the final statistics show the final picture clearly. Both teams put up 52 shots from the field, just a little higher than average. Tooele converted 23 of their shots against 20 sunk by Lehi. The freethrows are even closer; Lehi hit 23 out of 36 attempts That boils and Tooele hit 3 score with down to a Tooele on top, by just three field goals. Beth and Patricia Carroll, Kathy Higginson NORTH STAKE VOLLEYBALL 23-3- 69-6- The teams were pretty evenly matched, and it made for some exciting play. The Pioneers are still 1 for the season, quite respectful for this time of the season. The big test comes this weekend as the Pioneers go on the road for the first time, meeting with a rival 2A powerhouse in Richfield Friday night. The Pioneers have worked out some of the bugs, and should be ample competition for the Richfield team. The Pioneers follow that game with one to be played in Pleasant Grove Saturday night. Part of the success of the Pioneers this season has been the support felt at the games by the players by the school and townspeople. They owe a lot of their efforts to the emotional lift given by knowing they are backed up and appreciated. It wouldn't surprise me to see more people from Lehi at Pleasant Grove than their natives.
