Show THELEHI FREE PRESS THLRS.OCT.9.19 Sgt. Edgar Strain Injured In Fiery El Toro Crash Sutf Edar Sgt. Chris Evans, the plane left El Toro just a few minutes before the 1:52 p.m crash. Right before the crash, the tower got a May Day mes sage from the pilot saying the craft was losing altitude. The plane made initial impact on oik' hill, then careened a mile and a half through the air before shattering in a bull of fire on another hillside. Wreckage was strewn about the area. A Marine spokesman said none of the crew members apparently had a chance to bail out before the crash and the two survivors somehow managed to escape the burning plane on their own. Staff Sgt. Edgar Strain is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Strain of Lehi. He is married to the former Peggy Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Thompson also of Lehi. 2h. Strain, was badly injured in a fiery crash at El Toro Marine Air Station, California on Friday. Sept. 26. In the crash four marine airmen were killed and one other besides S. Sgt. Strain was critically injured. The men were Sjji. aboard a giant military cargo plane which crashed and burned minutes after take off from El Toro Marine Air Station. S. Sgt. Strain underwent surgery immediately after being rushed to the Mission Community Hospital. Mission Viejo with massive injuries. According to family members Edgar sus- tained crushed legs, broken back, broken arm and multiple lacerations. He's reported to be doing much better at press time.
