Peck and Sons, 4.55 South 600 East, Lehi. Deputy Sheriff Dick Smith said someone apparently poured sand into an air intake of tractors and motorized equipment owned by Thomas J. Peck & Sons, 455 South 600 East, Lehi. The damage was done between eight p.m. Tuesday night and six a.m. Wednesday morning according to the Peck's. Most of the nine damaged vehicles were in a fenced yard in Lehi, but damage was also done in the company's yard in Nephi. Deputy Smith said whoever vandalized the vehicles apparently went to great lengths as cuts were made to pour sand where it would be drawn into the motor but none of the vehicles bore any evidence of having been tampered with, such as particles of sand near the oil spouts or on the floor of the shop. Five trucks and loaders were put into use Wednesday before knowledge of the vandalism came to light. The Peck's began to get calls from drivers from Lehi to Idaho that their trucks had broken down enroute to their destination. It was then Pit 10, 1975 that the cause of the problem was discovered. Five truck motors, valued at $15,000 each were ruined as well as the motor in a $112,000 loader. According to Mr. Peck, "We're out of business. We can no longer operate." Estimated damages will amount to around $100,000 according to a spokesman for the firm. A reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism, is being offered by the Peck Company.
