Prizes Galore!!! 3 RAMA DRAWiN Bank Parking Lot. . . p.m. North Stake Pioneers Win League Opener The Lehi Pioneers downed the Payson Lions, at Payson, last Friday evening to ring up their first region victory of the year. The Pioneers looked impressive as they dominated most of the way. Payson used a multitude of defenses to bring pressure on the ball and keep it away from Soares in deep. Pay-soran two minutes off the clock before they took a shot, but Lehi quickly scored to bring them out of the slow down game. Coach Iverson had his e team in a zone for most of the evening. The n two-thre- Pioneers featured balanced scoring as all five starters scored in the first quarter. Lehi led 13 to 9 after eight minutes. The second quarter Ev Soares hit the boards well, blocked shots and dropped in 10 second quarter points to help Lehi to its JayVees Lose To Payson Payson started with 11 straight points then Lehi countered with eight to make the score at the end of the first quarter 11 to 8 for Payson. Pay-so- n went ahead 18 to 11 then Lehi put in seven straight to tie at 18 apiece. Payson led at half 20 to 18 for a very even first half as again the Lehi J.V. gave away alot of height. The young Pioneers turned cold from the field in the third quarter as they could only come up with 4 points and Payson scored 19 to lead by a 39 to 28 score. Lehi gained some ground in the fourth but fell short as final score of 52 to 41. Scoring went as follows: Ryan Davis, 11; Vic Colledge and John Welch 7 each; Todd Nelson, 5; Keith Harr, 4; Dennis Carlton, 4; Carl Hinton, 1. A good percentage for Lehi would have put the game away early in the fourth quarter, but we had problems hitting the free shots. Soares is causing opposing coaches trouble as he is quickly becoming a very dominating factory with his ability to block shots and also his rebounding strength. He also scores well. The Pioneers, with a solid win over Payson, take on the Vikings this Friday at Pleasant Grove. The Vikings registered an upset victory at Carbon last PleaFriday in overtime sant Grove features good balance, even though they are a young team, starting two sophomore and three seniors. They are improved over last year with 6' 5" senior Green at center, 6 foot senior, Swenson at one forward and soph, Stras-burat 6' 1" at the other forward. The guard line has 5' 10" senior Whitely and 6' 0" Butts, a soph at the other guard. One of the keys to the Viking success would be keeping Green in the game and away from foul trouble. Coach Andrus said that the support "was great" and enabled the athletic department to purchase additional equipment needed at the school.
