JULY 12. 1973 'H n ; -- V r s 1 Dee Hansen, Former Lehi rS Man, Retires After LONG 35 years of public ser- Hansen Dee retired from the Soil Conservation Service in Ogden on June 30. Hansen began his career in 1937 with the, then, "Soil Erosion Service". He has worked in Safford and Warren, Arizona, and several locations in Utah. He held supervisory positions for SCS in Lehi and Castle Dale and has served in staff positions in several other locations, the most recent being Ogden where he has worked for one year. Hansen attended Snow College and Brigham Young University and graduated from Utah State Agricultural College (now USU) in 1938 with a degree in chemistry. Dennis Huggard is the proprietor and created this attractive shop from virtually a "hole in the wall". The Long Bench is an of Porter's Place and in case you're curious it is not related to the notorious Long Branch Saloon, whose owner Kitty, dispenses foamy mugs of beer. But, the Long Bench Sa lon's Irene Edwards dishes up intoxicating concotions such as fresh strawberry sundaes, scrumptious banana splits, and ice cream cothe nes. Customers can sit and enjoy a treat there or take it with them. Snelgrove Ice Cream is featured in a variety of flavors, colors and sizes, such as single scoop, second scoop or super scoop! The decor carries out an early Western theme with a used- ever-popul- Local Firemen Thrill Thousands With Fireworks spectacular fireworks display sponsored by the Lehi Volunteer Fire Department thrilled the crowds of thousands A onlookers of Wednesday evening, climaxing the Independence Day anniversary. The eager crowd screamed with excitement as the rockets boomed and sprinkled the sky with brilliant color. The boom of the rockets was accompanied by the oohs and aahs from the watched. As in the past, the roads surPark were rounding Vet's packed with cars and the Park was full of appreciative and children eager who people. The day began with cannons roaring at daylight and the American Legion had done their usual good job by flying our nation's colors from flagpoles lining Main Street. To the Volunteer Fire Department of Lehi, a hearty thank you for their birthday tribute to the greatest country in the world. Long benches are situated on both walls with bentwood chairs and tables to accommodate ice cream hungry customers. The Long Bench will' provide cooling summer treats for sultry summer days and will furnish another exciting "Shop" with personality to Lehi's rapidly growing "City of Shops" on Main Street. Conditioning Class Slated Monday, July 16, marks the beginning of the football conditioning classes. The classes will run from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A $1.00 registration fee is charged for the class and must be paid on July 16. All boys who plan on playing football at Lehi High School are required to be in attendance. If for some reason a boy will not be able to be there he should contact Coach Jacob-seand let him know. The conditioning program is outlined as follows; July 16 - Conditioning; August 11 - Hand out Equipment; August 13 - Start Lehi Lady Injured In A.F. Crosswalk 69, 168 North West, Lehi, was struck by an auto while walking in a crosswalk in Am. Fork Saturday at 2:05 p.m. Mrs. Wathen with her daughter, Mrs. John (Darlene) Gudrun Wathen, 300 Gray and granddaughter, Karen, were crossing the street to their car which was parked near the Hunger Hut when she was hurled to the ground when hit by a car driven by Mrs. Byron (Paulette) Goodwin, 22, 443 North 800 East, Am. Fork. She was taken to the Am. Fork Hospital by ambulance and was treated for a shattered right arm and bruises. She is reported to be doing as well as can be expected. Mrs. Wathen was the Librarian at the Lehi Library for many years. Mrs. Gray and her daughter escaped injury. n Tuesday. September 4, 1973. Both the Salt Lake and Manti Temples will be open during the Provo Temple's August vacation period and members may be served by them. Patrons of the temple should note that on Tuesday, July 24, the Provo Temple will be closed. This state holiday, listed in the temple schedule as a day when the Provo Temple will be open, is not correct. This should be called to the attention of all members and especially those who have friends coming from afar, expecting the temple to be open July 24. They should be notified of this change. Visitors to the temple grounds will be welcomed from 12:00 noon tO 9:00 p.m. Saturdays and from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays for guided tours. ' ; July 24th Celebration The annual 24th of July celebration in Cedar Fort will start out with an 11 a.m. program at the Church. Games will be set up for young and old alike and will take place immediately following the program. The games will continue throughout the day Rash of Calls Keep Firemen Busy This Week rash of calls kept the local fire department busy over the weekend. They responded to a call on Friday night which proved to be a lightning-causefire on the Lake Mountains. Due to the inaccessability of the area firemen returned to Lehi and a small crew went to the scene early Saturday morning A d hiked to the fire area and worked until noon when six Bureau of Land Management firefighters were brought in by helicopter. alarm Saturday afternoon proved to be on Camp Williams Ground and as the National Guard have their own units for firefighting the local Department returned to Lehi. On Saturday evening firemen responded to a call near the city water tanks north of Lehi, and then went to a lightning-causegrass fire near the Redwood Road which a welcome rainstorm helped to extinguish. Fork Luana Searle of American Fork has been appointed general chairman of the Miss Utah County pageant, which will be held August 18 in the American Fork High School Auditorium. Utah County Commissioner Yukus Inouye has the responsibility for the pageant this year. Janet Harris is with Mrs. Searle. Mayors of various communities in Utah County will appoint community representatives to work with the central committee. Milne's delightful children's play, "Winnie the Pooh" will be presented at the Glen Smith Amphitheater next week, it was reported by Margaret Rogers, RaFawn Kunz and Scott Worley, directors. The play will be presented at 8 p.m. on July 16, 18 and 20 and the public is invited. Admission will be $1.00 for adults and 50 cents for children. The production is under the sponsorship of the Lehi City Recreation and Glen Smith is the producer. The play, which is suitable for family home evening, is about the bear, Pooh. He is always eating and gets into mischief all the time. Part of the play deals with a strange animal, a Kanga, who comes to the forest and tries to clean everything up, A Cedar Valley Prepares For The Utah County Recreation for the Handicapped-Annua- l will be held July 13 camp-ou- t and 14 at Balsom Camp at Hobble Creek in Springville Canyon. Follow the right fork at Kelly's Grove. The whole family is invited. Hot and drinks dogs, marshrfiallows will be furnished Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30. Parents are asked to bring pot luck in addition. Saturdays breakfast will be furnished starting at 6:30 a.m. Bring your utensils. Don't forget your fishing pole. The Utah Fish and Game will plant fish Friday afternoon. The program will be held Friday evening starting at i tl P August 5, 1973 All Provo Temple activities will be halted on August 5, when the temple closes for repairs and maintenance projects, in preparation for the opening on i . "The Fantasticks," a romantic musical comedy with words by Tom Jones and music by Harvey L. Schmidt, will be presented next week. Under the sponsorship of the Lehi City Suz-zan- and opeiator of the recently opened Shurtz Auto at the intersection of US 91 and U 73 in Lehi, does all types of automotive repair woik, except body and fender work. KENT SHURTZ, ownei Recreation, the entertaining and nationally known production will be staged July 17, 19 and 21 at the Glen Smith Amphitheatre. (The theatre can be reached by taking the overpass road past the high school to 900 North, turning left to 400 East, north to the Cemetery, following the road around the cemetery and continuing north on Dry Creek Way until you come to the theatre. Signs will be posted along the way). Cutain time for this production will be 8:30 p.m. and admission will be $1.00 for adults and 50 cents for children. The play is under the direction of Gary Burgees, who also plays the part of the Narrator. Other cast members include Carson, The Mute; Karen Pope, Girl; Barry Bullock, Boy; d Glen Smith, Girl's Father; Wing, Boy's Father; Corey Christensen, Old Actor; and Ron Hanson, Man Who Dies. Accompanist is Julyn Rasmus- Le-nar- sen and Russell Crabb, Lonne Evans, Clifford Smith, Corey Reynolds and Corey Christensen make up the light, technical and spotlight crew. The play is a story of fantasy, love and comedy. It involves a story of a boy, girl and two parents, a pretend feud and the fact that love sometimes looks different in the daylight than it does under the moon. The music is delightful and the entire production is interesting and easy to watch. It will make an enjoyable evening's entertainment. Everyone come! i Kent Shurtz Opens New Auto Repair Shop in Lehi It could almost be said that Kent Shurtz was born with a wrench in his hand for he says he has "carried one around" for most of his life. Mr. Shurtz is owner and operator of the recently opened Shurtz Auto at the intersection of US 91 and U 73 in Lehi. A native of Delta, he has been connected with the automotive repair business for the past 25 years. He does all types of automotive repair work except body and fender work including tune-upwheel alignments and brake work as well as other repair jobs. He said he specializes in automatic transmission s, WINNIE THE POOH Lehi City Recreation at, ' - The 8 p.m. delightful children's ploy will be presented under the sponsorship of the on Jul 16, 18 and 20 at the Smith Amphitheater. and automobile air conditioning repair. His garage is also a state inspection station. Although only two stalls are in his 60 x 60 foot building, Mr. Shurtz will have six stalls when the facility is completed. Entrance to the building may be gained either currently completed from US 91 or from U 73. Mr. Shurtz took automotive mechanics while in school and has completed General Motors Training School as well as "various other training schools along the way." He operated his own shop in Salt Lake City for II years prior to moving to Lehi.
