The fifth graders ventured up American Fork Canyon to the LDS owned Mutual Dell for a day and two evenings of instruction and learning. Wednesday, Jan. 28 found the 30 boys of Dan Adams' and Marlin Barnes' classes being transported to Mutual Dell by willing parents. The evening meal, bunk assignments and dell orientation were soon completed. Games, skits, night hike and star study, rounded and bedtime out the evening. Thursday, Jan. 29, started off with an early breakfast and then school began at 9:00 a.m. for the boys. Three instructors, Bruce Perry of the Forest Service, Carl Clark of the Soil Conservation Service, and Calvin Walker, local naturalist and principal, gave Instruction in snow measurement, tree identification, and nature lore. Each class lasted 45 minutes outside and 15 minutes inside to warm up and switch instructor. The 30 girls meanwhile, were attending a morning class at Timpanogos Cave Visitor's Center. The girls and parents arrived at the dell around 28-3- 0) stories noon. The boys then moved their gear out and the girls moved their gear in. A reverse schedule of classes took place in the afternoon with similar evening activi- ties for the girls. Even though this program is very similar to what has been done for many years at Central Elementary in Pleasant Grove, the Lehi group, after four years at Mutual Dell, are enthusiastic about the motivation for learning and parent participation achieved in this outdoor activity.
