Allan Hunter Plans Progressing Ree For Scout-- 0 At BYU April 12 said the breeder reactor has great potential for future generation of low cost power. A breeder reactor nuclear system creates more fissionable fuel than it consumes, thereby redue-th- an it consumes, thereby reducing fuel costs. While m any nuclear fueled generating plants in the nation today produce electricity, techniques have not yet been developed to make the breeder reactor a reality, and one importance of the breeder concept is that presently known economic fissionable fuel reserves are not sufficient to meet the nation's future nuclear power generation supply. Mr. Hunter said the breeder system represents an important approach to development of a reactor system with an exceptionally high breeding gain of new fissionable material and resultant low fuel cost. fast breeder The reactor (GCFR) system has the potential to create (breed) 50 per cent more fissionable fuel than is consumed in its operation, he said. Mr. Hunter said the program will carry out selected research and development and initiate design studies to establish the parameters of an experimental fast breeder reactor power system. The company and its subsidiary, The Western Colorado Power Co., serves in Utah, southeastern Idaho, the southwest corner of Wyoming and in southwestern Colorado. The companies now participating in the Gulf General Atomic program represent some 30 per cent of the total investor-owne- d generating capacity installed in the United States. Dr. Frederick deHoffmann, vice president of Gulf Oil Corporation and President of Gulf General Atomic, said Utah Power and Light has supported the development of advanced tech nology at Gulf General Atomic in programs starting in 1958. It was among the original group of Rocky Mountain and West Coast companies that backed the early development of the HighTemper-atur- e Gas - cooled Nuclear Reactor (HTGR) the most efficient nuclear power system in opera tion or under construction in the U. S. today. The addition of Utah Power and Light to the program raises the number of cooperating utilities to 37, and financial support by these utilities and Gulf General Atomic now exceeds 4.2 million. Work is directed toward a GCFR proto type or a reactor experimental facility and will include research and development and engineering design work for the facility. The program will encompass fast reactor core design and development, systems and component developments, and safety analysis. "We greatly welcome and ap preciate this participation of Utah Power and Light Company inGulf General Atomic' s advanced pow er programs," Dr. de Hoffmann said. In addition to the utility pro gram, Gulf General Atomic is carrying out GCFR work for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commis sion and with the Swiss Federal Institute for Reactor Research. i in 768-375- - WIGLETS WIGS, -tf 756-218- BOLEY REALTY, Stan, Receives "Duty To God" Award INC., 768-296- 12-12- -tf 373-643- 71 768-358- 768-335- 2 bedrooms, near Sego Lily School.
