Mr. Reynolds said that addiction is contagious, and no one ever forced anyone into becoming an addict. There are no educational programs going on at the present time. The legislature would need to appropriate money for this. The speaker said many obesity programs are dangerous and cause drug addiction, and emphasized that practitioners should prescribe only what is needed and in amounts advocated by the drug firm. England made drugs easily accessible to the addict, and their drug problem was soon out of control. Denmark has the highest addiction in the world, however, Russia has cooperated 100 percent on narcotics and their use is comparatively low. Dave Reynolds, State Drug and Narcotic agent spoke on the dangers of drug addiction. He stated that this is a serious and increasing problem, and each year more complaints are filed. He stated that proper education is needed; there is too much talk by too many experts who mean well, but no proper legislation. He attributed the sharp rise in the drug abuse to the glamori-zatio- n by publications and movies and television. The young people are made curious because of it, but do not realize the dangerous effects. Many can try and quit, but addiction is terrible, and whether young or old, addiction Is difficult to cure. Rehabilitation is almost 100 percent nil. Persons have received a five year prison sentence and been released and gone back in one week. Once on drugs always on drugs for life. Mr. Reynolds refuted statements that marijuana is not damaging to users. There is definite loss of perception, and crimes have been committed under the influence of marijuana. The large majority of heroin addicts began with marijuana first, 70 to 80 percent, but the user eventually wants something stronger. There is no nation on earth where marijuana is legal, it is outlawed everywhere. Use of exempt drugs containing codeine, controlled drugs such as amphetamines and barbiturates is widespread. Obesity pills are dangerous and addicting. Stimulants and depressents such as amphetimines, methadrine, tranquilizers can be purchased with forced prescriptions.
