Thomas, with Keith S. Powell as clerk. President Herman C. Goates presided at the service. Members of the outgoing bishopric included Duane Woffinden, bishop; with Ralph Wing and David Adamson, counselors. SLWOOD C. HUNT Bishop Hunt was born in Enterprise, Utah, but movedtoLehi with his family when He attended the local schools and graduated from the Lehi High School. He is the son of Jacob T. Hunt of Salt Lake City and the lateEstherCanfieldHunt. He is married to the former Ina Morris of American Fork and they are the parents of nine children- - Craig, 17; Kathleen, 16; Marsha, 15; Randy, 13; Timothy, 11; Arnold, nine; Sharlene, eight; Judy, seven; and Robert, four. Bishop Hunt served a mission in the California Mission. Upon his return to Lehi he served as Scoutmaster, a Stake Missionary and for the past 12 years he has been a member of the Lehi Stake High Council. He holds a BA and MA Degree from the B r i g h a m Young University and has also attended the University of Utah and Utah State University. For the past 15 years he has taught math and science in the Lehi Junior High School. Prior to this assignment he taught for one and one-ha- lf years in Orem. BLAINE G. THOMAS Mr. Thomas is a native of Castle Gate, Utah, but has spent most of his life in Lehi, grad of the Lehi Fifth Ward, where he has served in various ward and stake capacities. He is married to the former Shirley Smith of Cedar Fort and they are the parents of four children- - John, 14; David, 11; Laurene, seven and Eric, four. Church activities for Mr. Haws include serving as Scoutmaster, Secretary of the YMMIA, Sunday School teacher, Elders Quorum counselor and president; and together with his wife, as Ward Dance Directors. Mr. Haws is Staff Training Assistant for the Engineer Headquarters of the 115th Engineer Group of the Utah National Guard, assigned to the Murray Headquarters. He holds the rank of Second Lieutenant. He has been a member of the National Guard for the past 17 years, with the last 13 years as a full time member. Prior to this assignment he attended the Brigham Young University for two years. He has also attended specialized schools in connection with his employment. He has just recently returned from the Engineer Officers Basic Course at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. In 1960 he was named OutstandingFirstSer-gean- t of the Utah National Guard and in 1962 was named by the Lehi Jaycees to receive their Distinguished Service Award. He has received hisMasterM-Ma- n Award and for the past 14 years has been a member of the Lehi Volunteer Fire Department, serving as secretary, crew chief and captain. For many years he was a member of the Lehi Jaycees and served in various capacities as an officer and committee members. While attached to the Lehi National Guard Unit he was active in the Bantam Basketball program. KEITH S. POWELL Mr. Powell was born in Lehi, but moved to Levan, where he spent his youth, graduating from high school there. He then returned to Lehi to make his home. He is the son of Mrs. Nicoline Powell and the late Thadine Powell. He is married to the former Maxine Van Wagoner and they are the parents of eight children-Gar- y, who has just been trans- tire life as a member uating from the Lehi schools. He has served as, president of the Elders Quorum, Secretary and President of the 68th Quorum of Seventy, has worked in the YMMIA, was a member of the Stake Genealogy Committee and has been a Home Teacher for many years. He is a member of the High Priest Quorum. Lehi Elementary Schools Set Registration Date Pre-scho- ol registration for all new elementary students is sch- eduled for August 19, 1968. This will be at the schools from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All students who are new to this area, or kindergarten students who were not registered last spring, should be registered at this time. Please bring promotion cards from last school attended. Students who have been transferred from one school to the other will not need to report at this time. By registering early you will save yourself and the school time and confusion on the opening day of school. Special Baseball Meeting Monday A special baseball meeting will be held next Monday, August 19, at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Building, it is announced by Ron Peck, boys' baseball director in Lehi. He has foUowed a major in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and a minor in Educational Administration. He has served as a full time teaching associate in the physical education department at the University of Utah this past year. His DoctoralDis-sertatio- n was "An Evaluation of the Graduate Professional Program in Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Utah, based on a Study of Its Graduates.'' During the past nine years he has taught at the Junior High School level, the High School level and the College level. He coached and taught at Shelley High School in Idaho and Jr. High School in Murray, Utah. He taught physical education at Utah State University for one year. He is a graduate of Lehi High School and Utah State University. He received his B.S, degree in 1957 and his M.S. degree in 1959 from Utah State University. Dr. Evans holds a commission in the Army Reserve and is currently a Plans and Operations Officer in the 96th U. S. Army Reserve Command, Ft. Douglas, Utah. The new Dr. Evans is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W,F, Evans of Lehi and has resided in Lehi for the past five and one half years. He is currently serving as president of the elders quorum in the Third Ward. GROUND BREAKINGGround Groundbreaking Ceremonies Held for Training School fJospfol Wing Groundbreaking cere- monies for addition of a new wing to the Utah State Training School hospital were held here Tuesday morning. Participating in the rites which signaled start of the new constriction were Jay Stevens, assistant sHerintendent; Dr. Elmo Eddington Training School Med; Mrs. Bernice ical Archibald,, Nursing Director; and Dr. Dean Taylor, Training School dentist. Mr. Stevens noted that the new facilities will include a ward, an isolation area, new dental facilities and staff offices. It will increase capacity of the hospital by about ten to 15 per cent, he said. Constructed on the west side pirecr 28-b- ed Fol-low-- st Lehi Beautification Scrapbook To be Entered For State, National Rating in Near Future written report on the city beautification in Lehi has been submitted for consideration by state and national committees, it is reported by George W. Leany, beautification chairman. The scrapbook which features the various projects taken up and the response of families in the community, will be sent in at a slightly later date. Mr. Leany expressed pleasure and commendation for the efforts put forth by Lehi residents as a whole, as well as for the cooperation of the city. City employees have kept the roadsides mowed throughout the summer, thus providing substantial aid to families in keeping up the neat and attractive appearance of all sections of the community. Boy Scout troops have aided in cleanup operations wherever desired, in all areas of the city. A survey of this work has also been made by the scouts and submitted to the committee. FINAL CLEANUP Chairman Leany met with the City Council to request further aid, which will be provided. Mayor Calvin H. Swenson added his request to that of the Beautification Committee that all residents put forth an extra effort at this time, as a final cleanup of the season. The use of a street sweeper as another sanitary measure was also considered. The purchase of a new police car was requested by Lehi Police Chief Berl Peterson. Full support of the city was pledged in a final effort for community beautification, this season, and favorable comment was made by the beautification committee chairman, George W. Leany. Mayor Calvin H. Swenson conducted the meeting, with Coun-cilmMorris W. Clark, E. Rus-se- ll Innes, Dr. Kent B. Davis and Reed L. Sunderland in attendance. Councilman J. B. Cooper was excused. Also present were City Recorder Ned Wilson and City Attorney Harvard R. Hinton and Basil J. Dorton. A representative of the Atlas Equipment Company, Mr. Barnt-hous- e, met with the group to discuss the operation of the street sweeper his company had overhauled for the city. He reported on his contact with the street department last week. Councilman Innes pointed out that the machine must be operated at full throttle in order for the conveyor to work. The operation of the machine was discussed and Mr. Barnthouse expressed the belief that the problem could be corrected with some adjustments. Council members expressed the firm belief that the machine should operate without any problems, considering the cost and also the length of time which has been spent in getting it repaired. The total invoice was $3,816.12. Mr. Barnthouse stated that he would check concerning f be made by four judges, sometime after August 26. C. on a previous occasion, to accept a national award. Mornings Postmaster Evans reported that he has received many complaints concerning the destruction and damage of rural mail boxes by means of fireworks and firearms. The County Sheriff and Lehi Police have been alerted and anyone caught will be subject to the full penalty as provided by the course of the law. Appearance indicate that many of these acts of vandalism have been done by teenagers in cars. Parents are urged to check on these young people and instruct them as to the serious consequences for such wanton acts. Arthur Harding Sustained as New Ward Clerk Arthur H. Harding, who has been serving as Explorer leader and also secretary in the Elders Quorum, was sustained as ward clerk in the Lehi Eighth Ward, Sunday. He is succeeding C. Wesley Rasmussen, who has capably handled the position since the organization of the new ward, three years ago In March. Elder Harding has also been serving as a home teacher. UTAH TECH HAS ATHLETIC TEAMS Utah Technical College at Salt Lake is offering an intramural athletic program for its students. Basketball, golf, volleyball, softball and various other tournaments will become part of college life at the college. OPENING FOR LEHI ROAD SUPERINTENDENT Applications for roads and streets superintendent are now available at the Lehi City office. Grant Smith, now head of this department, is retiring as of Sept. 1, and men with experience who are interested and can qualify are asked to pick up an application blank.
