Permission of the board was granted. New Locks for Lockers Pleasant Grove Junior High requested and received permission to purchase approximately 250 com bination locks which will be at tached to the doors of the hall lockers. New Mimeograph Machine American Fork High School re quested permission to purchase from their activity funds, an electric mimeograph machine. The old machine will be turned in as part payment. The balance of $600 will be paid as stated from school activity funds. Permission for the purchase was granted. Adult High School The board reviewed and gave permission to proceed with an adult high school providing a sufficient enrollment is forthcoming. The new adult school will be under the direction of Mrs. Clark (Ellen) Brown, supervisor of adult education for the Alpine School District. Justification of the new school was based upon the fact that more than 25 per cent of the ninth grade pupils in Utah leave school before graduation. Many of these individuals are presently heads of families and are employed during school hours and cannot attend regular high schools. In addition, adult attendance at a regular high school is discouraged by school officials; therefore, if high school graduation becomes a reality for those who drop out before being graduated, provisions must be made for an adult high school. Regular certified teachers will be provided. Credit for course work will be based upon a class which meets a minimum of 108 clock hours. Any adult over 18 and not enrolled in high school may attend. After an adult has completed all of the requirements for graduation, he will be issued a diploma from the adult high school signed by Superintendent Dan W. Peterson and Mrs. Ellen Brown. Classes which have been approved for graduation from any Utah high school will be offered in the adult high school. If other classes are given, approval must be given in advance from the state department of public instruction. Credit for graduation may be obtained in the following ways: (1) transcript from other schools; (2) special tests; (3) military service; (4) work experience; and (5) courses from the adult high school. f credits is not Duplication permitted. This means that credit received in high school courses may not be given for courses repeated in the adult high school.
