Show 7 Forester Receives Superior Service Award Chester Olsen, Regional Foree ter for the Intermountain Region of the U. S. Forest Service received a Superior Service Award in Washington D. C. today, according to word receiver at the Forest Service headquarters in Ogden. The citation was presented by Secretary of Agricultlre Ezra Taft Benson al special ceremonies held in the Sylvan Theater on the Washington Monument grounds in Washington D.C. Principal speaker at the LEHI FREE PRESS, LEHI, UTAH THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1935 Llr LJ 1 i A FULL DAY OF FUN cere- mony, attended by 5,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture employees and others, was Representative Cliford R. Hope, Minority Leader of the House Agriculture Com- mute. Secretary Benson said that Mr. Olsen received the award "for his important leadership in develop- ing, applying, and gaining public appreciation of natural resource conservation which is vital to the Nation's welfare." A native of Mayfield, Utah, Mr. Olsen attended the Utah State Agricultural College. He herded sheep on the Manti National Forest before joining the Forest Service as a ranger in 1919. Before becoming Regional Forester in 1950, he rose through the ranks from Assistant Forest Supervisor, Forest Supervisor and Assistant Regional Forestor. The Intermountain Region of the Forest Service, over which he has responsibility for administration and protection of 19 national includes forests, Utah, Nevada; northern Idaho, and western Wy- oming. In addition to his recognized accomplishment for successful Forester Olsen has had an outstanding career in civic duties and community leadership. He has taken active leadership and directorship of civic clubs and groups; has held the Presidency of the Ogden Champer of Commerce and is a director in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He earned the Silver Beaver for devotion and leadership in Scouting," and led veterans affairs, chest, Red Cross and U. S. Defense Bond drives. In addition to hundreds of people to whom he is a first-nam- e friend in the Intermountain Region, Mr. Olsen is also well known for his friendship, and devotion and leadership to conservation nationally. He has appeared before a wide variety of intermountain groups to contribute to their objective thinking and knowledge of conservation of our renewable natural resources; has appeared on radio and TV programs, and is the author of many articles on the subject. As a result of Regional Forester Olsen's outstanding ability and effort, the report listed many accomplishments as contributions to the security and welfare of the intermountain area including a marked reduction in forest fires, man improved cooperation-wildlif- e agement programs, a reduction in vandalism to public properties, restoration of depleted watersheds, reseeding of thousands of acres of national forest range lands, and the sucessful elemination of insect infestations which threatened to destroy timber resources valued at millions of dollars.
