These eggs are laid in such places as manure piles, piles of rotten vegetable matter that accumulate around the yard or farm, in dead animal matter, and other waste materials. In one or two days the eggs hatch into white worms or maggots where they grow and feed on the surrounding filth for another three or four days and then each surrounds itself with a hard shell known as the pupa. After a few days of warm weather .. the adult flies emerge and are ready to start A female fly may start feeding. laying eggs in from nine to twelve days after emerging from the pupa case. A fly must have soft moist food to eat. This food usually consists of human and animal wastes and decaying substances or food left exposed in and around the home. During the process of feeding thousands of small germs are left on the food. Excrement from the intestinal tract is deposited around the premises which may contain human disease germs such as dysenteries, diarrhea, typhoid, tuberculosis and other intestinal diseases. In addition to the above method of disease transmisson, the fly's body is covered with countless numbers of tiny hairs which collect disease organisms from filth and transmit them to human beings or from infected animals or man to well human beings. Te control this fly menace it is necessary to eliminate the breeding places. Manure should be hauled onto the fields where it can dry and be covered. Piles of rotten fruits should be buried. Rubbish piles should be eliminated. Dead chickens or animals should be kept in metal covered containers and properly disposed of. Homes should have windows and doors screened to keep the flies out. Where outside privies are in use, these should be made flyproof. If we would control flies, we must control their breeding places and eliminate-thei- r food supplies.
