Show THURSDAY, AUGUST it, THE LEHI FREE PRESS, LEHL UTAH 1957 County Group Studies Mosquito Problem and Most Effective Control Aim Are your midsummer evenings made miserable by mosquitoes? That is the general' feeling of people throughout Utah County, as attested to by a representative group of Utah County residents at a meeting held at the Utah Valley Hospital, under the sponsorship of the Utah County Tuberculosis and Health Association. Dr. Eddie F. Barr, President of the Association, presided. Those attending were Dr. E. H. Beaghler, Rotary Club, Glen Sagers, Health Department, Donald M. Allred, B. Y. U., Harold W. Keetch, Lindon Mayor, Marvin R. Laws, Orem California Alameda, 1957 10. August The Lehi Free Press Gentlemen: Enclosed herewith please find my check drawn payable in your order for $3.00 to renew my subscription to your valuable little paper for another year. I wish I could honestly say that I always thoroughly enjoy your paper. Too often you are forced to print the account of the passing of a relative or a boyhood friend which naturally is saddening Those incidents are beyond your control, of course. But my old classmate, Tom Kirk-hais still around doing things which are newsworthy. He is to be congratulated for his continued activity. By the way, Tom used to contribute a column to your paper two or three years ago which I considered well worth reading. Perhaps his tramping over pioneer trails takes up so much of his spare time he cannot write any more. Too bad! I will be watching your future editions for the continued successes of Gary Hardman and Lynn Stewart in their Soap Box racing. These boys deserve the highest esteem of their fellow townsmen. So does Johnny Hutchings for his work as a naturalist. His museum deserves the support of all who wish to spread the name of Lehi and aid those interested in that subject. There are doubtless many worth-whil- e things going on in Lehi which needs like support but of which I am unaware because of my long absence. I note many changes upon my rather infrequent visits to my home town. Lehi Juncition, where I was born, has completely dis appeared and the Sugar Factory where I worked so many shifts is all but gone and old friends have become very scarce. Still the arrival of your paper awakens many pleasant memories of years gone by so, despite the moments of sadness I get from reading it, I still feel to keep it coming. Very truly yours, M. D. Evans meeting has been set for Friday, August 23 at 2 p.m. at the county commissioners office. Anyone Interested in combating the mosquito menace in the county is urged to attend. He City-Coun- Seven Conservation Projects Listed By Alpine Irrigation Company Seven conservation projects to be sponsored by the Alpine Irrigation Company were announced today by D. D. Adamson, company president. The projects were recently approved by the Alpine Soil Conservation District Board at a board meeting and arrangements are being made to complete at least two of the projects by late fall or early spring. According to J. Earl Smith, chairman of the board and district conservation supervisor, the district anticipates furnishing assistance of the Soil Conservation Service to the company for the told the group of the expense involved in an effective abatement program. The mosquitoes' ability to fly fairly long distances and their wide differences in habits make elimination of all mosquitoes an impossibility. The destruction of the places where the mosquitoes breed costs the most but has the most permanent value. This can be accomplished by draining ponds of stagnant water or filling them in. Spraying is a temporary measure at best and must be repeated at regular intervals in order to prove effective. It was noted that in 1952 the entire County was sprayed and there was a definite Mr. Sagers pointimprovement. ed out that Utah County is the only County south of Box Elder, of comparable population, without an abatement program. Dr. C. M Smith, Director of the Health Department, stressed the health hazards to both humans and livestock resulting from the infectious bits of the mosquito. Encephalitis, Tularemia and Malaria result from mosquito bites. There have been epidemics of encephalitis in California and St. Louis. One case of malaria in Utah County is definitely known to have resulted from the bite of a mosquito. Dr. Smith pointed out that the Health is in no position financially to carry on a mosquito abatement program at the present time since it is operating on approximately ninety cents per capita basis, which is the very minimum. Mayor Stansfield gave an enlightening report on the work being done in Goshen in connection Lake in his area and said he was made vividly aware of the magnitude of the mosquito problem from observing the innumerable breeding places of the mosquitoes which cluster around the Lake. Mayor Stansfield is of the opinion that much more research into the problem would be beneficial before any organized campaign of control is launched; and he recommended that the Morris County Health Department, in Morris-towNew Jersey, be contacted relative to the successful abatement program recently conducted there. A committee consisting of Mr. J. H. Zeuger. as Chairman, Mr C. A. Rasmussen and Dr. Flake Rogers was appointed to arrange a meeting with the County Commissioners with the express purpose of asking for an appropriation sufficiently large to make it possible for the Health Department to carry on an efficient program, which would include the mosquito NOW. ..MORE For fast, dtptndablt shipping OimOcDini IPocO'ffn THAN EVER.
