During a normal day's operation, five operators are on duty before the plotting board receiving incoming calls from observation posts throughout the state. Two or more volunteers are at work behind the board plotting the aircraft flights with grease pencils on the plexiglass, a task more difficult than it would appear, since they must find the proper location and., mark the flight path, reading and writing backwards. schedule receiving 240-wo- rd Hospital Notes Mrs. Nellie Warden medical treatment July received On an upper dail in front of the plotting board, additional operators are at work maintaining ready telephone and radio con-twith other filter centers, with Air Force interceptor bases, or with other strategic locations. The center has 126 volunteers employed for organizational work ind along with the civilian staff there is a large staff of Air Force personnel who supervise the entire operation. Altogether it adds up to a force of several thousand or full- all engaged, part-tim- e time, in tracing the flights of planes over jets and multi-engiUtah. What is the reason for ct the lower right corner of the board. It's designation: Albuquerque Air Defense Identification Zone, the air defense zone surrounding the atomic and military installations at Los Alamos and adjacent ares. The civilian volunteers spotting planes and plotting them on tha plexiglass board are forming a vital line of defense between Russia's air bases and these vital installations. When you consider' that Russian planes are only 214 hours away by jet stream from Los Alamos, you can see how important the work of the filter center is. As one Air Force officer stated "If we can't stop all this activity? them here, we won't get them;" The reason is readily apparent If there are enough civilian eyes in a glance at the huge plexiglass watching the sky, they can't get plotting board.
