All teemed so peaceful, quiet and serene. Lehi might seem very unimport ant, compared with other cities, in the opinion of the uninformed. Sucb an opinion would be very far from the truth. The part it played in but one great activity entitles it to marked distinction. Lehi was the cradle of the beet sugar industry which has spread all over the West. The revered Thomas R. Cutler was the guiding spirit which founded the company which built the Lehi Sugar Factory. It has long been my understanding that the Lehi factory was the. first one in the United States to make a success of manu facturing sugar from beets, grown entirely by irrigation. Mr. Cutler, with the aid of many loyal and energetic assistants, built the parent, company from meager assets into one of the prosperous giant concerns of Utah and Idaho in particular; many other states got their ideas and planned their activities from what was done in Lehi. Countless Lehi men left to accept responsible positions elsewhere after getting their training in the Lehi facory the names of only those I can recall would be very lengthy. I remember seeing the laying of the corner stone of the Lehi factory while sitting on my father's shoulder; I was little more than a baby, .1 also remember, while again sitting on my father's shoulder, being present when President, Benjamin Harrison, had his train stopped as it passed the factory. Mr. Cutler made a few welcoming remarks outlining the hopes held for the success of the venture replying to which the President expressed his confidence Give me all fears to dominate, All purest joys to know, ' To be the friend I wish to be, To speak the tru,th I know.
