So, it is evident that so long as the brushes are east and west of the commutator, no electricity is flowing and so the galvanometer remains upright If the pilot wants to fly east he sets the brush holder so that the brushei will be east and west of the commutator so long as the plane is flying due east. Whenever there is the lightest deviation from the due-eacourse, the brushes move from their east-weposition, current enters the galvanometer and the needle jumps to indicate that the plane is off course. ... st st 5455 Hank But suppose he doesn't want to fly east? Robinson If he wants to fly in any other direction than due east he merely sets the brushes so that they will be east and west of the commutator, and keeps on that course. Hank I think I gel it. Robinson Now here we have the tachometer. This keeps the record of the speed of the motor in revolutions per minute. . . . The speed is indicated by means of a flexible shaft connecting the camshaft or some other rotating part of the engine, with the instrument. . . . There are two types of tachometers in use; the chromatic and the centrifugaL This one is of the centrifugal type. I prefer it to the chromatic because it is less complicated in its mechanism, and when it is installed according to the Standards of the Society of Automotive Engineers, it works perfectly and needs no attention except a shot of grease occasionally to prevent friction. That's the instrument which indicates both fuel and oil pressures. It's connected with the engine by soft copper tubing, and the only care in installation is to guard against vibration. Vibration may cause the copper to crystallize and break, which, of course, means that there's a leak in the fuel and oil lines. More than once forced landing has been caused by just that little thing. . . . The instrument is very simple just a Bourdon tube which expands under pressure, causing the hand to rotate and so indicate the pressure exerted. . . . Next we have the fuel level gauge and this is an impor- tant No Crocheted Gloves. However, there are those who contend that the chromatic tachometer is far more accurate, which I very much doubt. . . . The principle of the chromatic is based on a mechanism timed to indicate the revolutions of the engine interor at vals. . . . This centrifugal type is merely a small flyball governor which operates the indicator. Hank How important is it? How Robinson How important? important is it to know if your engine is running just right? Callt Enclose 16 cents for Pattern 709 And he can always depend on the fuel gauge to tell him? Robinson If his plane has been so thoroughly checked that he can be sure there are no leaks in the lines. The smallest leak will cause incorrect reading and the pilot who doesn't know how much fuel he has left can find himself in a pretty difficult spot. This chap has the hydrostatic fuel gauge, which is in almost universal use. It works very simply, A small air chamber is placed in the bottom of the fuel tank and connected by small tubing to a sensitive pressure gauge. Variation in the height of the gasoline in the tank affects the pressure of the air in the cell, and that is transmitted to the indicator, which is calibrated to show the number of gallons of fuel in the tank. Hank That is a pretty important job. Til have to do a Hide mulling over what you've told me before I'll know what it's all about, but I'll get it. Robinson What I've been explaining to you will make it easier for you when the time comes for you to actually use instruments and that's not vet. That comes in a more ad vanced stage of training. . . . And! of course, the instruments on this board are very few and relatively! 1 ..MB,' j simple.
