Show I I Friday, April 3, 1992 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Seven Musical solidarity: Amnesty International show Swim Herschel Swim, Iceburn, House of Cards, Hairfarm and Reality By KimBerly Johnson Chronicle Music Critic The evening's second band, Reality, finds its influences in the punk and straight edge music which surfaced in the 80s, flourishing especially on the Salt Lake mid-to-la- Tonight, Friday, April 3, a meeting of the minds (so to speak) will take place right here in our very own Union Ballroom. It's not another ClintonBrown debate, nor even a discussion of the therapeutic benefits of No, this is a gathering of toad-lickin- g. far-reachi- implications. Our local university chapter of Amnesty International is putting on a fundraiser after the fashion of last year's Lollapollooza tour, on a slightly smaller scale. Josh Dalton, president of the University of Utah chapter, said, "This show is a great opportunity for us. We're hoping to increase awareness about Amnesty International on and off campus. We really want to increase membership. Plus, this gives the community a chance to see some great local bands perform bands that people may not have heard." Those bands are culled from many different facets of the Utah music scene. Consider Out of Autumn, formed some two years ago, whose pop sounds mirror the alternative rock of Ride. Somewhere between cheeriness and chiming sorrow, the sounds of Out of Autumn are accessible and, perhaps most importantly, easy to dance to. te scene. While more melodic than fellow thrashers, Hairfarm, Reality maintains enough coarseness to convey discontent and suggest insurrection. Hairfarm is comprised in part of members of the late, loud Victims Willing, including and large perennially foreboding frontman Brad Barker. Hairfarm's brand of punk should even the most please discriminating hardcore tastes and incite those assembled to some cathartic physical frenzy. This could c6me in handy for those of us whose spring breaks were not quite long enough. Iceburn, similarly, finds its roots in various patches of the local garden. With edgy guitar work by Gentry ("that quiet guy") and a solid foundation, Iceburn's sound resembles the balls-to-the-w- all intense burning which its name suggests, its smoldering tone punctuated by icy shards of guitar. House of Cards, less intense and slightly warmer, due to what is known as the white-ho- t blues influences, will continue the guitar theme on into the slow, night. The evening will be skanked to a close by ska heroes Swim Herschel Swim, perhaps the most fun band in the all-arou- nd Cheers' Woody By Andrew Wade Chronicle Film Critic : White Men Can't Jump Twentieth Century Fox Directed by Ron Shelton Produced by Don Miller and David Lester Written by Ron Shelton Starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson partying, the goal is generally Tonight's accomplished. performance should be no exception. In characteristic style, Swim Herschel Swim will be playing fast, rootsy music that is pure (to borrow a phrase) Food For Feet. Snipes has gained notoriety in such films as Jungle Fever and New Jack City. By Steve Sessions Chronicle Feature Writer Last night, just after watching Scott Bakula another complete successful trip through space and time in Quantum Leap, I entered my own journey through time. The place was the Zephyr Club in Salt Lake City and the year was 1970-somethin- g. Everyone was to see gathered Peter Frampton. (You remember, he was the guy who starred with the Bee Gees in Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.) Frampton is currently on the road playing for smaller audiences in smaller venues, but judging by the sound level and quality of the music, Frampton must have thought he was playing at Madison Square Garden in New York a sight often visited by Frampton during the height of his career in the mid-708. The crowd was full of Disco Babies who had waited in line for hours to see their hero from high school. By the looks of one couple who were, in fact, too drunk to stand, the last concert they had attended was probably Seals and. Crofts. The entire crowd see "Frampton" on page nine |
