Show Thursday, February 7, The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Seven 1991 Here they come folks; the '60s leftovers are at it again There's a new show in town folks! Entertainment-starve- d Salt Lake City, as well as the rest of the United States, finally has some high quality amusement. Those rebellious, flag burning, anti-wa- r slogan yelling, Vietnam-ve- t spitting, 1960s flower children are back with a vengeance. Do we want the dinosaurs of that generation to be our moral leaders? Shun these pukes and their 1960s culture. Don't be pulled into the ideological excrement that that generation is trying to vicariously relive through you. There is too much at stake for us to take a back seat to these people. They had their chance to change the world and they failed. We are hurting ourselves by associating with them. The selectivity of your protests is also sickening. No one is innocent in a war, so why aren't you protesting Iraq's contribution to this little world dilemma? Your tactics and rhetoric leaves you morally bankrupt. Your positions on many of the issues are very frustrating to me. I just cannot figure out why we Americans have such an obsession sanctions. with economic Sanctions are Present ASUU America's placebo when it comes the Nations, One of my class assignments this quarter has been to research a partial history of student government here at the University of Utah. To say it's been interesting would be an understatement; closer to the truth would be that it's been a little frightening. In 1967, several ASUU student leaders were accused of physically hiding vote ballots to ensure their party's victory. In 1969, two ASUU officers were arrested and later convicted of dealing drugs at ASUU Assembly meetings. In 1975, basic legislation vital to ASUU operation was never enacted because many student leaders wouldn't show up at council meetings. In 1988 (a particularly interesting the ASUU leadership introduced a bill to the Senate that granted substantial tuition wavers to certain (specifically named) members of the Executive Council (it was only barely voted down). Later the same year, the ASUU Special Projects committee allocated $3,000 to student sponsor a special year-en-d bash featuring a performance by the "Flaming Lips." In 1989, a very high ranking ASUU leader was accused of using parts of his speaking engagements at other Chronicle Guest Columnist intelligence, Newsweek, and even our own beloved George Herbert Walker Bush will tell us otherwise. think it's been wisely decided that given Saddam's psycho propensity to start wars, it would be a bad thing to let him have control of 25 percent of the planet's oil. It's not because we're afraid that Saddam will get a I historically ineffectual organization that was responsible for the 12 resolutions that spelled out conditions for a solution to the problem with Saddam. All of the resolutions and diplomatic efforts by other countries were rejected. The final and ultimate political better pension plan than he deserves, or that he may gain a monopoly on oil trading. He would still have to sell the oil at tool is war. With the failure of all of the previous its market price. means of The problem is that it's a bad diplomacy there comes a moment of truth. How important is your political objective? If this idea to give someone like Saddam 25 percent of the world's oil income to satisfy his little fettish conflict were merely about "blood for oil" I'm confident our troops would still be sitting in the Saudi sand, sober and celibate. The conflict is quite a bit more complex than that. Many would for buying weapons of mass destruction. This is not a "Toys R Us" shopping spree. Saddam's course syllabus reads something like this: Chemistry 101: Sarin and mustard gas dispersal over civilian populations; Biology have us believe that Saint Saddam is no threat to us and even if he is a threat to others, it's not any of our business. Others, 101: How to use Botulii virus to infect water supplies; Physics Lab: Motion of projectiles shot from super artillery weapons; like Amnesty International, International Red Cross, Israeli leaders better than colleges to sell Editor: Stan Wright to international politics. They give us big moral warm fuzzies when, in reality, they don't accomplish anything. Reform happens because of changing political forces such as the peace settlement in Angola and the decline in communism. Another tool to bring about political change is the United kits. nt (He later went on to work for the company). After reading about these (and other) episodes, it pleased me to note that current U. students can boast of having had one of the more dynamic and effective ASUU governments in U. history. I ran in Nuclear Engineering Lab: Third World and blackmail intimidation. These are some serious toys with serious price tags. Price tags that are affordable when you have oil revenue. Many third world countries have recently developed nuclear weapons and have emerged as regional superpowers. While no one is happy about the proliferation of these weapons, the countries have been greeted with the cautious optimism that they will use their new weapons as an influence for stability. Is Saddam a force for stability? This man's vision of a brave new world is one where he drags his country into a spiraling suicidal war with his Arab neighbors, the Israelis, and anybody and everybody else who opposes him. Many people are saying that if we don't stop him now we will have to stop him in five to 10 years. I'm kind of an extremist in this area because I think that if he is not stopped here and now, he will never be stopped. Since the war has started, I've also been sickened by the who doesn't realize all of these that weapons are refined killing machines. highly an engineering as Indeed, student I'm amazed at the resources committed to producing these weapons. But I thank God we have weapons that can go and do a job without sending someone's father, mother, sister, war-mong- brother, son, daughter or whoever to do the equivalent job. War is about killing and destruction. No one is innocent. Finally, it's my hope that all of you who have been participating in the coalitions for peace in the Middle East will get a clue and break ranks with the 1960s mentality that has surrounded that circus. And when this whole y thing is over and your crisis-mentalit- has passed, I really hope that you will pursue with the same vigor the problems that require true activism. The environment, the economy, democracy in Eastern Europe, and about how our "Nintendo" arsenal dehumanizes the enemy. I have yet to meet a t, soldier or person, bitching peace-activis- a Middle East peace conference. Our generation can make major contributions in these areas. I'm afraid that if this 1960s mentality and it's leaders become our model for initiating change in our society, we will be destined to fail as miserably as they did in their day. past That is why I want to ask all U. students to consider very carefully the 1991-9- 2 batch of ASUU leadership candidates, and to reject those who advocate a radical or laissez-fair- e attitude toward student leadership.
