Show The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Five Wednesday, February 6, Domestic solutions found in Gulf Watching Bush's State of the Union address last Tuesday, one thing became clear. If it weren't for this Persian Gulf business, the Bush administration would be practically invisible. But, in all fairness, President Bush did try to offer some explanation of why domestic issues have not been brought to the forefront. It had something to do with people taking care of the less fortunate with no help from the government. A nice idea, but it hasn't worked so far. What George Bush doesn't realize is that the solution to his domestic issues lies in the Persian Gulf crisis itself. I offer a few benevolent suggestions to help him out. First off, this homelessness problem is an easy one to lick. Just get those recruitment agents away from the high schools and on to every city street in America. Then get every homeless person suited up and ship 'em overseas. They'll never again have to worry where their next meal is coming from, they know it'll be coming from those little silver packets found only in the finest Saudi Arabian military posts. Clothing? No problem. Give 'em the most fashionable camel-brow- n war attire. The rewards from this for the Bush administration will be THUS Eleni Vatsis Chronicle Columnist boundless. His '92 campaign will include the most incredible television ad yet. Forget Willie Horton, this time it's a once unknown homeless man, now known as Dusty by his new found friends and professional cohorts. Given the chance to defend his country, he was seen on CNN by a New York modeling agency. He now professionally models desert sportswear for Saks Fifth Avenue. Don't you want a leaker who can do the same for you? Vote for good ol' George again in '92 and give yourself a chance at the American dream. With that problem solved, Bush can move on to his next problem, illiteracy. This one's even easier than that homeless thing. Bush has said that every literate person should sit down with someone who can't read and teach them how. Naturally, the government shouldn't have anything to I do with education. But say teach them the only word they need to know to get on Bush's good side: CHAMSE Mm And now for those AIDS patients Bush has a funny habit of ignoring. He should announce a program that gives meaning to patients' last days on earth. Of course, fearing that many AIDS victims might be homosexuals, he wouldn't allow them into the military. What about making the White House an AIDS patients' haven? I mean someone's got to watch those war reports coming in while George, Brent, and John take cat naps. Besides, no one can ever say that George Bush doesn't pay attention to the AIDS problem. The problem will follow him where ever he goes. And there's even a solution to the drug problem. Eliminate clandestine operations in the ghettos. Have the dealers sell directly to the government. If for nothing else, they can use the drugs to pack equipment being sent to the Persian Gulf. With domestic issues now taken care of and the war effort receiving Bush's full energy and attention, mid-afterno- 1991 mwm Mm IS YOUR CALIFORNIA CONNECTION on Los Angeles from$89' from$89 from$89' from$89' Oakland San Jose Orange County San Diego each way each way each way each way from$89' each way MORRIS AIR SERVICE the Administration's public opinion rating will no doubt skyrocket. I, With the world changing dramatically all around us, a clear student voice is needed as an integral part of the political system. Students across the nation have begun to commit themselves and tneir resources to the struggles of progressive actions. It is now our time to join the student movement, a movement based solely on the interests of students and committed solely to actions. The current war on minorities, women and working people throughout the world, manifested through the unjust war in the Middle East, must be at the center of our political struggle. We must intensify our struggle through actions. Anti-wa- r sentiments will not bring this war to an end. It must through the actions of mass mobilizations that the misrepresentation of minorities and working people in the make-u- p of troops, can be stopped. Only through actions can the struggle for in the Middle East be accomplished. Bring the troops home alive, now! self-determinati- co-op'- s, Non-smoke- rs on We as students, must not only fight against the war in the Middle East, but must also study the example of the ooutn African people's struggle against the Palestinian fight for a apartheid, the struggle or Latvians for homeland, continue the struggle for the right of a woman to control her own body. Racism in this country must be stopped through action, the racism endured by Native americans, Hispanics, Our responsibility lies in moving humanity forward, through educating ourselves and organizing tne appropriate actions. To this end, Yamila Mu and Michael Ziouras (THE CHANGE IS NOW!) have throughout their lives been organizing people and action, broadening discussions and speaking out on social concerns throughout this nation. As we do not seek the candidates for the ASUU Presidency and but tool which can push the of rather as offices as being the end our campaign, the social campaign forward more quickly, establishing a government not as an activist's government, but a government as an activist itself? Our campus suffers from a misrepresentational lack of minority students. The people of color who attend our university have a difficult tenure and classes offered students do not attest the contributions made by minorities. The experiences and struggles of people of color are not presented to us. This creates TAHOE self-determinati- African-American- Arab-American- s, Vice-Presidenc- s. mm y, a strong foundation for racism to flourish. We can put an end v to this! Together, we can progress forward by expanding our curriculum and including a the requirement in our Liberal Education program of a class education us in contributions made by minorities. Nationally, other campuses have already instituted a similar requirement. We must join the national and progressive student movement. We must make our voices at the University of Utah be heard in demanding "U.S. Out of the Middle East!" "End Racism on Campuses Now!" We must move forward on student interests and cannot do so by limiting ourselves to this campus alone. THE CHANGE IS NOW! n Q. o o W |
