Show Monday, January 7, 1991 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Seventeen WAC from page sixteen POSTSEASON PREDICTION: In his three years at CSV, Grant's teams have gone to the NCAAs twice and the NIT once. Look for Colorado State to either be an NIT team this year, or to be sitting home after the WAC tourney. Hawaii Rainbows (9-With the exception of Utah, Hawaii maybe the league's biggest surprise of the year. Riley Wallace lost four 6) 4, starters from his NIT team in 25-1- 0 including all-tim- ): e leading scorer Chris Gaines and outstanding forward Terry Houston. 1989-9- 0, Yet the Rainbows have played some outstanding basketball, including a win over 11th ranked Pittsburgh. Troy Bowe, the lone returning starter, is one reason Hawaii has played above baseball scholarship, has played well at center for the Rainbows. POSTSEASON PREDICTION: Hawaii has gone to two consecutive NTTs, and may well make it three in a row. The NCAA tourney is out of the question. 7) Brigham Young Cougars (7-Shawn Bradley, the from Emery County, has lived to up billing thus far. He's scoring 17 points, pulling down nine rebounds and blocking six shots per game as a freshman. But while Bradley has lived up to advanced billing, the Cougars have not. Simply put, BYU is a backcourt away from being an outstanding expectations. The senior point guard is averaging a league high six assists per game while lending experience to a host of newcomers. Ray Reed, a transfer from Seminole (Okla.) Junior College, has paid dividends immediately for Wallace. Through the e schedule Reed averaged 24 points per game to lead the WAC in that department. Phil Lott, a junior, has stepped into a starting role and has provided 17 points an outing, while Chris Walz, who came to Hawaii on a 8, ): boy-gia- non-leagu- nt team. The inside trio of Steve Schreiner, Kenneth Roberts and Bradley is as good as any in the league. But the guard line lacks quickness and has given up too many turnovers. should be commended for BYU playing a tough pre-leag- schedule, ue however. Nationally ranked East Tennessee State, St. Johns and South Carolina have played the Cougs and all of BYU's games have been against Division I teams. Look for BYU to improve as the season progresses with its success largely determined by how well the guards play. POSTSEASON PREDICTION: As long as the Cougars have a winning record at the end of the season, they will be attractive to the NIT for two reasons: first, they are a good CUEAN WMM FESTHVAL attendance draw and second, the player anomaly of having a is intriguing to the media and fans alike. ): San Diego State Aztecs (5-Jim Brandenburg won't admit it, but he probably wishes he never left 8) 0-2- 7, Wyoming. Consider: in nine years as the head coach in Laramie, Brandenburg led the Cowboys to three WAC titles, four postseason appearances and never had a losing record. Since taking over the sputtering Aztec program four years ago, he's never had a winning mark. His best finish in conference play at SDSU is The winter weather might be nicer in San Diego, but the basketball sure isn't. It's going to be another long season for San Diego State basketball. The Aztecs do have a fine center in Marty Dow, who is averaging 1. 18 points and nine rebounds per game. Senior forward Authur Massey has also played well, averaging 16 points an outing. The best news for CINEMA FROM REVOLUTIONARY CUBA Brandenburg is that he has some fine THIS WEEK: young players in freshmen Chris, LUCIA McKinney, Joe McNaull and Courtie Miller. POSTSEASON PREDICTION: A snowball's chance on Mission Beach of playing in a national tourney. 9) Air Force Falcons (5-The good news is that Air Force beat Ohio State in the Liberty Bowl. The THURSDAY, JANUARY 10 6:30 RM., OSH AUDITORIUM The most spectacular masterpiece to emerge from Latin American cinema to date, Lucia's three parts each focus on a woman in a different era of modern Cuban history: a colonial aristocrat, a terrorist's lover, and a peasant abused by her revolutionary husband. (1969) 6, 0-1- ): bad news is that football season is over. This is the first year A.D. (After Dudley) for Reggie Minton 's ballclub. WAC leading scorer Raymond Dudley has graduated, and without him the Falcons will be hard pressed to win four conference All-tim- games. Minton is a fine coach, but the restrictions inherent at a military academy are not conducive to winning basketball games. Chris Lowry is Air Force's top gun, averaging 17 points, while Aaron Thursdays 6:30 p.m., Jan 10 Mar 14 Orson Spencer Hall Auditorium Sponsored by the University Central American Solidarity Coalition, in conjunction with the University of Utah Division Continuing Education and th Associated Students of the University of Utah.
