"His story was that he had had some drinks the night before," said Steve Lewis, company vice president. For the 0.06 level, it is estimated his blood alcohol level was 1.5 when he kft San Francisco. Smith was cited on a charge of violation of a motor carrier safety regulation that bars driving while in possession of an intoxicant, including possession in the body. He was allowed to go home on a Greyhound Bus. He had committed no other infractions during his six years driving with the company, said Lewis. It was the first time a driver for the firm had been accused of having alcohol on his breath. He was dismissed because Lewis Brothers has a "more stringent standard" by which drivers' conduct is judged. "We feel like he had alcohol on his breath and that was evidence of poor judgment on his part," said Lewis. "His driving didn't seem impaired to us," said Ann E. Harman, president of the U. Residence Halls Student Association. She said the bus had just left Reno, "it had been maybe 20 minutes," when it was pulled over. There was some concern then, particularly because "a lot of people were reading about the bus with the senior citizens that crashed." She said all the delegates "handled themselves well," as they also had done at the conference to represent the U. The incident had another ironic twist because the conference had focused on healthy lifestyles, "such as not drinking," said Harman.
