Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Friday, February 21, 19S6 Page Nine EDITORIAL U.S. genocide bill will support life Most of us weren't even born when President Harry S. Truman signed a treaty 37 years ago (TK JB making genocide an international crime. The measure was written in response to the Holocaust, in which millions of Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis. Though we weren't around when the pact was first drafted, most would agree that approval of such a cam i cir measure would help prevent any recurrence of a genocide. Well, you'd think most would agree. Unfortunately, lawmakers, including our own Sen. Jake Garn, have prevented the passage of the genocide treaty for 37 years. The treaty makes it a crime to systematically kill or injure members of a national, racial, ethnic or religious group. Passage of the treaty is long overdue. The Holocaust caused the death of more than 6 million European Jews during World War II. Following the tragedy, the United States and many other nations came to the realization the importance of equality. For that reason this country should have been the first to have approved the measure. Instead, the United States followed 96 other nations in approving it. The Chronicle congratulates Sen. Orrin Hatch and the other senators who supported the treaty. While discouraging genocide, their support shows that they care for the continuation of all human life. LETTERS Don't ruin Lady Liberty Editor: should stop and think of what they are really doing to the Lady; they could ruin her. Let us hope that the United States doesn't become so dollar-hungr- y that we would risk our monuments, our dollar. statues, our heritage, for that ever-evasi- I am in agreement with your editorial of Feb. 20 on the plans for Lady Liberty being unacceptable. Commerciali- zation of America's soundest institution is a direct insult to the Lady and to the United States. Thousands of families have immigrated to the United States and have seen and been welcomed by Lady Liberty. She is the symbol of freedom, the symbol of America. How would it look if we were foreigners coming to the United States in the future and instead of seeing Lady Liberty in all her splendor, we sec a McDonald's or a high rise hotel blocking her from view, or even distracting us from her? It would look ridiculous and blind. If these plans do happen, the meaning of freedom and liberty will become the victim of free enterprise.
