Between 1972 and 1982, the number of self-employ- ed women increased 69 percent nationwide. But Nancy Bell, treasurer of the Utah Association of Women Business Owners (UAWBO), said the number of women-owne- d businesses in Utah has been growing at a more rapid pace. "The number of women who own businesses is increasing all the time," she said. "The fact that our association (UAWBO) grew from 35 to 80 members last year signals a terrific amount of growth. Bell said Utah women own a variety of businesses, including construction and insurance companies, businesses and clothing stores. Many women who don't own their companies are filling the high management positions which Bell calls "the next best thing. A Wall Street Journal GzWup poll showed that more senior executives think it is becoming easier for young women to break into management. Most businesswomen attribute this to affirmative action legislation and changing attitudes. "Male dominated industries are reluctantly accepting the fact that women are in the business world and they are here to say, Bell said. And when I said Tm the boss,' they would look at me like oh sure lady where's the guy in the back?' "People are taking women in business more seriously now, she said. In spite of the advances, problems still exist. Twenty-fiv- e percent of the businesswomen surveyed said they had been hindered by male attitudes toward women. One problem women cited was a tendency by males to resist taking orders from a female boss. However, Terry Hanney, a Salt Lake Gty male who construction company, hasn't works in a woman-owne- d had any trouble adapting. Hanney says people are sometimes shocked to find that Energy Works a company that specializes in making buildings energy efficient is owned by a woman. However, he insists that the kind of job his company does soon removes any apprehensions the customer might have. "Intelligent people are realizing that quality is what counts," he said. "I strongly support quality no matter what sex it comes in." Hanney said he respects his employer's standards and ideas and there have never been any problems. Bell said women who own businesses are helping each other by sharing advice and suggestions through support organizations like UAWBO. Women are also supporting each other by doing business with women-owne- d companies as much as possible, she said. - ( 1 i - .. or :' .v: - -- V - "V .
