It was somewhat noted in the city for offering what it called the "Family Delight." a combination of three items, one of which is sea slugs. It often led people to wonder "whose family?" Salt Lake City's Hunan Restaurant is the newest of the many Chinese restaurants in the city which specialize in the hot and spicy Smhuan cuisine. It is also one of the best it also does not offer sea slugs. Sm huan restaurants have flourished in the last year or so. following the njxning of Ho llo Gourmet and continuing with The Peai and The Sm huan. The restaurants have not only iniroduted local palates to hot and spicy Oriental cuisine, but also to a new method of ordering Chinese food. Kadi jM'rson in the wrty orders one dish and the whole spread is eaten family sile. This style of eating is espec tally good when there is a large group, ensuring a wide variety of dishes. Because Ho Ho's quality is slipping and The IVail is consistently inconsistent. The Smhuan. an inconspicuous cinder block cafe on 100 South, has become my Misonal 1 sea slugs, but still a delight again cr hot. The Vegetal ian's Delight intituled water chestnuts, mushiooms. bam boo shoots, snow tcasaiul c allots all cut in large pieces and cooked to ciuiuhv (xifettion in a light favorite. Bui the Ilunaiiottersalaigei menu and if somelittle things can be worked out. I may change my mind. Hunan's menu literally tuns the gamut from soup to nuts uonton soup to lichee nuts. In between, there is an astounding i ai icty of poultry, beef. (toil and seafood dishes, most prepared hot and spicy but u ith many combinations of ingredients. The menu also includes I Oapjx'tieis. five soups and the usual kinds of egg foo yung and fried rice. Hunan also offers a good variety of vegetable entrees, inc luding twotofu combinations Tofu Sec huan Style with ground meal and x pK i coins, and Tofu Shanghai Style with mushiooms and bamboo shoots. A sxriali of the house is Chinese sty le soft noodles, which aie picpated five ways. We sampled four menu items, siai ting with egg roll, u hie h no Oriental meal would be complete without. The egg rolls weie prepared just right crisp on the outside, moist on the inside stuffed with cabbage. They wetegratefully ungreasx .
