If this has been your iew of opera, then by all means go and see "Trouble in Tahiti" and "The Stoned Guest" in the Geology Lab theatre. Both plays are performed in oiierattc form, but don't let that stop you from seeing some brilliant performances. In the contemporary "Trouble in Tahiti." the married couple Sam (Sieve Griffith) and Dinah (Susan Peters) find that the communication gap has driven a wedge between them. Each one pulls into his own world to find happiness that is missing. Sam finds his solace in being a champion both in sports and in business. At first. Griffith's et formatter came off mec hanically, without muc h thought of laying any attention to Dinah. He seemed to anticipate his coining lines and that took out a lot of emotional impact. But as the play progressed, he became more comfoi table with the pan. and during a scene where Sam and Dinah mm in passing, they gave a c hilling and very real k i fonnaiue showing why their marriage was suffering. As for Peters, she alone makes this play well worth string. As Peters cieaies a woman with just enough vulnerability and strong-wille- d innocence to make the audience want lo reath out and comfort her in her sadness. Her voite is strong and determined, with just the tight touch of sadness blended in to create a haunting, yet beautiful, quality. Together. Gtiffiih by C2 0 tr ii d, and Peters create a moment in time that many have felt, where two people want desieiately to reach out to each other, but both of them have foigottrn how. Direc tor Paul Siephan made a good c hoice in using P.D.Q. Bac h's "The Stoned Guest '' as a counterpart lo the first play. "The Stoned Guest" is a cra quilt comedy satirizing ojktj and is based on the simple premise of being lost in the woods. The characters take on light (Misonas. with stub colorful names as Donna Ribalda. Don Octave and Cat nun Ghia. As Donna.
