Mi Give Log:n First Loss isW Everything comes to him and Bear River High's basketball squad finally got tired of waiting this week handing the Logan Grizzlies Jtheir first league loss of the year, M i iie game was one ot inoe who waits A cT 48-4- . i 6 41 strategy contests where both coach and players deserve praise. Coach Paul Jeppesen came up with a slow down offense that was so patient it totally frustrated the Grizzlies. But the offense wasn't the only frustrating thing the Logan squad faced. Inspite of the fact that the Grizzlies offense relies on going to the big men over-confide- nt inside-particul- arly y.y 0 e Clay Bears abandoned Broad-bent-th- (v. the zone defense they've been forced to use most of the year and went with what could only be described as a "scrambling" The Bears traded baskets man-to-ma- hitting on 10 of 21 shots as Broadbent and Jason Allen went to work. The Grizzlies scored the first five points of the second quarter closing to within three as the Bears failed to score for the first three minutes of play. But the Bears weren't about to go into their second half folding act. They slowed the ball down, looked for the good shots, and went scrambling and hustling after loose balls. With Bradshaw out on fouls the final 4:15 minutes resembled a doctor working on a cardiac patient. Just when it looked like the Bear's heart had stopped, the doctor got it pumping again. Ahead by three, the Bears refused to getaway from the four corners offense. Hess scored a couple of chairity tosses, Morrison hit an open shot from outside. With the ball out of bounds, Jeppesen showed what a coach shows up at the game for as he diagramed a play that worked perfectly win but it wasn't to be. So frustrated they couldn't take advantage even when they got breaks, the Grizzlies hurt themselves with three technical fouls caused by an much of the first quarter taking a two point lead finally and from there they were never headed. Getting the starting assignment at center, Barry Bradshaw showed some of the form his coaches have been expecting all year as he hit on the turnaround jumper from the key over Broad-ben- t. Bradshaw scored six of his eight points in the first stanza. But even more important he teamed up with Tad Morrison and Mark Williams to limit Broadbent to just two field goals in the first hald. As a team, the Grizzlies hit only about seven of 27 the first half while the Bears hit on 11 of 26. Broadbent broke lose in the second half to score five goals and with his 8 of 14 from the line tallied 22 points to lead all scorers. The Grizzlies came to the game with the equipment to unruly bench and some temper displays on court. But the story of the night had to be little guard Nolan Hess-the man with veins and Elmer's Glue fingers. Hess controlled the ball all night. And in the end when Logan was desperate and going for the cylinder, it was Hess who made the Grizzlies believers from the foul line. Infact, it was Hess all night. 3 in the secLeading ond quarter, Hess scored six points in a row as he hit for a field goal, got a two point freethrow, canned a technical foul for the Bears and followed up with one of those just as the buzzer sounds field goals to give the Bears a 5 lead: But the Grizzlies weren't dead. Round Robin Slated Last Saturday ended the league cutter races for the four divisions of the Bear River Valley Cutter Association. Many teams were aiming at positions in various brackets of the round robin. As a result, there were many good races and with the run-off- s coming up next week, there promises to be more. The track was probably the fastest it's been all year, as indicated by the, times posted. Every aged team broke the 24 second mark with Verl Udy's team topping the field at 22.86. .ALTHOUGH IT MAY appear confusing as to just who is shooting the ball, the shot was actually put up by Bear River forward Tad Morrison (31). Logan center Clay Broadbent (12) goes up high to attempt to block the shot as one of Bear River's centers, Todd Grant, (43) comes in to back up the shot. The Bears won giving Logan its first league loss. . Grapplers Host Warriors Here Bear River grapplers play host to the last of the big three in Region One tonight when the Weber Warriors come to town. Box Elder, Skyview and Weber look like they will finish the season in that order.
