The Bears used seven straight running plays with Webb and Kidman moving inside the Miner 20. Webb ended the afternoon outing catching a pass in the end zone for his third touchdown. The point after failed and the game stood 19-Even then, with the game in the bag, the Miners couldn't muster anything off what should have been, by then, a relaxed Bear River squad. The kickoff on the next play bounced off the shins of a Miner lineman and bounced back towards Jimmy Carza of the Bears who fell on it to rob the Bingham squad of possession. rd Friday At 2 p.m. Here mm Quarterfinal Opponent Rated Number One In Hold it. The football sea- son at Bear River High School isn't over yet. A 19-- , victory over the Bingham Miners Tuesday afternoon assured the Bears of at least one more game this season. Quarter final game? That's right. Tournament bids for the Bear River football team have been few and far be-- , tween among the tall timber of Region One. Last year the Bears blew a chance to get and earn a into the play-of- f tournament bid with a loss to Logan. But this year they bested the Cache Valley team and won the play-of- f tilt in fine fashion. Friday afternoon's contest will pit brother against brother as Bear River Coach Bill Jacobsen will be across the field from his older of brother, head coach Springville. The Bears are against teams this year and can take some comfort in that going up against Springville. Payson tied Springville with identical records in the Region. Bear River did away with Payson in their opening game of the season. But Springville beat Payson. A win over Springville could be particularly sweet for Jacobsen since his brother predicted the Bears wouldn't get by Bingham. The Springville coach made the prediction not so much with the idea that Bingham was better, but more because of experience.-Bing-ha- m had been there before. s 0 . e, 3-- i 3-- 1 3-- 5-- 1 Tuesday, Bear River started off like gangbusters, but quickly reverted to the image of reluctant bride-to-b- e at the wedding on their first possession. Nolan Hess gave the Bears good field position on the 38 as they received. And quarterback Mark Williams followed on first down with a pass to Howard Rawlinson, swingback, that was good to the Bingham 20. But a penalty nullified the pass, moving the ball back to the Bear's 23. The Bears eventually had to punt from their ten. Bingham looked like they intended to take immediate charge, taking advantage of good field position and two Bear River penalties to move to the ten and then to the seven. The Bear's next series moved well until it was stopped by an interception at the Bingham 10. The Riverite defense played brilliantly all afternoon. Getting the ball back in four downs for the offense, the Bears got a roughing the kicker penalty out of the Miners to keep their drive alive. Using the running of Curtis Kidman and Chris Webb, they pushed to the Miner 26. From there, the Bears used a pass play that worked effectively much of the afternoon. With sending two receivers out deep, Webb came out of the backfield and across to the sideline on a short pattern, took the William's pass and tiptoed down the sideline a few yards for the 3-- A HOWARD RAWLINSON sweeps around left end on a run d 70 Shortly thereafter, the frustrated Miners packed up and went home. The Bears took over from Bingham four plays later and moved in for the second score of the half. Starting at their 25, they used Webb effectively for gains of five and six yards at a time while Bingham was apparently keying on Kidman. A pass to Hess moved the Bears from their own 48 to the Miner's 35. Rawlinson pulled down his second pass of the drive to get the ball to the three-yarline. From there, Webb plunged over for the touchdown and Jeff Oyler added the kick after to make it 13-The score could have been much more lopsided. The Bears used a end around type play by Rawlinson to get the ball to the Miner six with only 29 seconds left in the half. An interception at the goal line with no time left thwarted the drive. The Miners accomplished one thing at half time. They shored up their defense for the second half and were much more successful in containing the Bears' running game. Their offense, however, continued to sputter and their passing game apparently stayed at home. On their first possession of the second half, the Miners moved to the Bear River 29 but missed a first down on fourth down by only an inch.
