The money should be earmarked for industrial and business promotion as opposed to being used, let's say, to foot the bill for the annual C of C banquet. As it stands now, the Chamber is supported strictly by the dues of its members. We're saying that city government ought to be a member. LIKE The reason is simple. City government has a vested interest in seeing its business and industrial community grow steadily and in the right direction. The city, for example, will receive about $180,000 in sales tax in a year's time. A large chunk of that will be used to fund a hospital for the north county area. But a large sum will also be left over for use by the city in their yearly budget. That money is generated by county residents who do business with local businessmen. In addition, local businesses act as collection agencies for the tax with no reimbursement Commission. Unthinkable The Bright Side Cd Why a Washington study group has had the nerve to recommend that White collar government workers be paid according to their ability and not accor- ding to their seniority. They even bad the nerve to recommend that the wages of some top government workers be cut back to a level in line with private industry. FURTHERMORE, LOCAL businesses and industry provide a tax base for city, county and state as well as providing employment for many county residents. A city government dependent largely on revenue generated from property and sales taxes should take a keen interest in the health of its business JSmmunity.' j The local Chamber of Commerce has done a more than adequate job in attracting new businesses such as the Coast to Coast hardware store which will open in March and light industry U' We've decided to change the name of a recently imfrom plemented column "Good Deeds" to simply "The Bright Side." Older and valued employes should be compensated for their years of service. But mediocrity should not and, too often, seniority becomes the sole basis on which wages are deter- - mined.
