'Lifting' Can Be Fun When You're Building Muscles Lugging 400 and 450 pound weights around might not sound too appealing to the average person but to David Christensen, Brigham Young University graduate living in Preston, nothing can beat it. Christensen, originally from Caldwell, placed third in the NCAA-AAchampionships at Long Beach, Calif., last year. The business management graduate who is working as an operations officer for 17 First Security Bank at its Preston branch, says he took up the sport five years ago because of his small stature ' (5-165) and has pursued it as a hobby ever since. I CHRISTENSEN o I explains "l I there are three different forms of lifting weight lifting, power lifting and Olympic lifting. It is the Olympic lifting with the clean and jerk and snatch lifts that are more widely known but he says power lifting is gaining in popularity. In power lifting, Christen-sen'- s specialty, the bench press, full squat and dead lift are used. The power lifting method develops the main large muscles in a show of strength while Olympic lifting involves more coordination, he points out. FINDING tournaments for power lifters can be difficult as most of the meets are on the East coast. However, Christensen returned last from the Western BYU with a first place in the class. He has taken the Western states championship for four years and holds regional records for the bench press squat and best class. total for the The modest Christensen also is the only lifter in the West that holds a master's rating in powerlifting in his weight class. His brother, Paul, an employe at First Security bank, Boise, won the title in the Western Open class. While lifting tournaments are hard to come by in his native state of Idaho, the sport is growing. However, hotbed for lifting regionally is in Colorado where Christensen hopes to go in Janu month Open held ary for a meet. at d WHAT DOES Dave's wife, Renee, think of the hobby. Besides having stacks of weights around the apartment living room, she loves it, he says. "She never misses a tournament and helps me work out." Christensen said his wife "spots me" with help on the weights while attempting the bench press. Christensen now can lift 450 pounds with "relative ease" and says the sport "grows on you" after you start building up your power. His only regret to date was that he didn't start earlier. He said those who start in the high school years are a lot further along at his age. Most of the world champions are about 35 years old after building up for 0 years. THE BANK worker speaks highly of the sport which he says will be included in the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal next year. advoThe weight-liftin- g cate has several challenges facing him now as he keeps building for increased strength. He cannot find adequate training facilities in the local area and has a hard time finding someone to work out with. He also would like to go to the Senior Nationals next year but they are in the East. Despite these challenges, Christensen continues to work out on his own catching the tournaments he can and adding to the growing list of titles and trophies that already fill a shelf in his living room. 15-2- Vi) ni c ; j Jf H ii IN J J ; 4.0 pounds can bp tough.
