Show 4, Page THE LEADER-TH- GARLAND TIMES, May 16, 1974 E LETTERS Tlhe Id TO THE EDITOP.f fc2r I Congratulations Editorial iff- - , 1rvl ( Mass Meeting Is Chance To Be Involved their way to advertise the mass meetings, with only four days left until the mass meetings, today's notice in this paper is the first indication we've seen of where and when mass meetings will be held and our list is incomplete. The partys attituJe is no doubt the result of years of pjblic apathy. TKIK indication of ho deeply policial scandals such as Watergate have seared the American voter's conscience should be apparent Monday night. May 20. when the traditional mass meetings of tlie various political parties are held throughout Hah. THK Hi:KK LOt Al.LV, tiie mass meeting provides a golden opportunity for Uh? person who would like to get active in politics and would like to have a say in the caliber of men who are nominated to carry the party standard. VOTERS FAIL to realize that the mass meeting is the first opportunity to help determine who will represent the party. Delegates chosen at the mass meeting will attend the county convention sometime in June where nominees for county offices are confirmed from among the announced hopefuls. Delegates are thence chosen to do the same job at tlie state convention in July. TO MA.W people, the miss m?eting is a vat'ue idea at the back of their mind that somehow slipped by unnoticed leaving tlie voter no other choice but to vote for whomever a handful! of people succeeded in nominating at the convention. And if Uie voter is lucky, he may get a choice between two or more candidates at a primary election. OF C both Die local eitUen and Ol'KSi: the parties are at fault. Despite Watergate, political involvement at the grass roots seems still to be the property of a few party stalwarts who annually beat the bushes And the parties to drum ip candidates. themselves don't seem to have gone out of THE small turnout at mass meetings, it should be a simple matter for the political novice supported by a few political allies to get himself or herself elected a WITH delegate. CITIZENS may choose to attend any of the three political party's mass meetings Monday depending on their views. We hope they do just that. Politics at the grass roots could stand some new faces in the crowd. t Dear Editor, Ob behalf of the Concerned Citizens Committee of Bm Elder County, I congratulate all those who have filed to seek election to public office this year. This is a good indication that some of the apathy of the past is being dissipated and more people are becoming actively involved in the local, state, and national governmental pro- feV' ' cesses. If We encourage everyone to attend and take an active part in the mass meetings which w ill be held next Monday, May 20th, at 7 p.m. Don't hesitate to ask the candidates if they stand for the basic issues of private ownership and control of property, free enterprise, and limited government as provided for by our Constitution; or for state land use planning of private propstate control of the LANDSCA PING Landscaping is underway to finally put the finishing touches on Tremonton City's Civic Center, erty, production and distribution of goods, and an unlimited Francom-T- he federal bureaucracy. There is one thing about that final joining of the rails that puzzles me. You'd think that the original cast would have graboed the historical significants of their act. If they could have just visualized in their mind the number of people who would trek to that place every year thereafter towatchthat sam; scene over, Pm sure they'd have postponed the original scene until June when its warmrr.
