JrVsah .w. 4-- 4-- H and ; They are parts for a solid propellant rocket motor designed to yield about one and a half million pounds of thrust for use as a space launch booster. Thiokol Chemical Corporation in Brigham City, Utah is building the space booster for the Air Force Space Systems Division. Purpose of the program is to determine whether solid propellant rocket motors in this size range are feasible and to study motor components for such a rocket. segThe front and ments both- - more than 2(W eet long, will be processed at the northern Utah missile plant and then loaded with approximately 135 tons of propellant each. A third segment already in manufacture at the plant, will form the center of the motor. When all three segments are loaded with propellant, they will be mated to form the space launch motor. Later this year, the motor will be test fired at the Division's test facility- - Durthe firing, more than ing 700,000 pounds of solid propellant will burn in approximately 2 minutes. Because these 13 foot diameter cases are the largest solid propellant rocket motors that can be transported by truck and rail, they are being studied for use on a large Ballistic Missile. h fflo) sac C GOLDEN SPIKE V -- SSI aft-en- d three-segme- nt Produced by D.
