Sponsored by the Tremonton Women's Civic League, the con- Mail Truck Tips Over at Portage A Wycoff mail truck drivwi by Louis Christensen, Pocatello overturned east of Portage, Fri day of last week. According to state trooper Ralph Kotter, Christensen was driving west toward Portage, when he hit the abutment of the bridge, knocked over the guard rail and overturned the mail truck. Thedamage to the truck is estimated between $800 and' $1,000 by Mr. Kotter. The driver was uninjured. Patrolman Kotter also investigated a one car accident west: of Bear River City Monday "' morning. Winner of the queen title will be eligible to compete with other girls from the state for the title of Miss Utah State Fair and may go on to Miss Utah competition later this year. Despite the low number of entrants, the five girls trying for the honor insure a gracious queen and attendants to preside over the county celebration August 27, 28, and 29. The contest and judging will be held in the Bear River High School Visual Aids room Monday at 8 p.m. Competing for the crown will be Kathy Summers, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Summers, Tremonton. Kathy was named the 1963 Garland Wheat and Beet Days Queen, and is a graduate of Bear River High School. Adele Ward, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moroni Ward, Tremonton is also entered in the contest. Adele was named FFA Sweetheart at Bear River High School where she graduated in May. Sylvia Fraser, 18, daughter '. of Mr. an! Mrs. Keith Fraser, Tremonton, is also competing for the crown. Sylvia was an officer in the bjgh school, pep club and served as an editor for the school annual, The Bear-faShe was named to Girl's State in 1963. Gloria Lewis, 18, Thatcher, will be vieing for honors in the contest. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Lewis. Gloria is a 1964 graduate of Bear River High and participated in pep club and other activities. The only Brigham City entrant in the contest is Rama Glover, 17, daughter of" Mr. and Mrs. "Clyde Glover, Brigham City. She has recently returned from Sun Valley . where she served as an instructor in baton twirling. Judges for the contest are former "Miss USA" Charlotte James F. Sheffield Maxfield, Hodgson, a Salt Lake City ad- vertising executive and Duane Hill, prominent actor musician from Salt Lake City. . 'l, ' -- x. Saturday Set As Day For Registration . : Saturday, August 22, is" another of the important registration days for Box Elder County voters before the November 3, genera election. Last Tuesday was also a registration day at the various district registrars in the county. The Saturday date was chos-se- n for the convenience of citizens who were unable to register on the two previous Tuesday registration days. After this Saturday voters may register on October 22 (a Saturday) and on October 15, ; ' Continued on page 4 Everly Brothers Set For Fair Concert Their appearance marks the first time a nationally famous entertaining group has appeared at the local event They are appearing through the courtesy of a specially organized committee who are sponsoring the event for the enjoyment of Northern Utah and Southern Idaho patrons. It was in 1945, Don was eight years old and Phil six, when Ike and Margaret Everly turned to the boys and said, "You both like to sing with us at home. How would you like to do it on radio?" How ' would they like it? They'd love it! The next night the new act of "The Everly Family", introducing Don and Phil made its debut Don and Phil were born in a small town called Brownie, Kentucky, Don on February 1, 1937, and Phil on January 19, 1951. The family had moved from Brownie to Chicago while the boys were in their preschool years and then to Shenandoah, la. After several years than, an offer came for the family to broadcast a country music show from a radio station In Knoxvtte, Tennessee. U wasn't easy (or no nm after the net making the rounds of recording studios and with no success. agencies Months of frustration and disappointments went by. Saturday nights they would hang out around the alley of the stage door to Grand Ole Opry, the number one country music show in the, nation hoping to be noticed. Finally, "Bye. Bye Love", was .recorded for Cadence. It sold one and a half million records! The ' struggling days were over. The boys didn't rest on the one record. A steady stream of hits followed. Later, the boys switched to Warner Bros. Records, and the hits continued. "Kathy's Gown", their first for .Warners, sold 2,500,000. In addition, half and three quarter million sellers including LP and EP albums. Several numbers were written by Don and Phil. Offers poured in on 'the boys for personal appearances. These were not only from every part of the. United States but all over the world. Almost every top TV show wanted them, aU adding to their success. The boys began The Everly Brothers, well known recording artists will be making a single appearance at the Box Elder County Fair, Thursday, August 27: The nationally famous singers will be accompanied by a 5 piece orchestra and will appear, locally prior to their weekend engagement in Salt Lake City. . FIRST WARD GROUP ' Chuck Wagon Breakfast Set Fair tune brings the annual Chuck Wagon Breakfast again, sponsored by the Box Elder County Sheriffs Posse. Fair , dates are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27, 28, and 29, and breakfast will be served those three mornings from 5 a.m. until 10 a.m. at 163 West Main, just east of Ray Newman's American Service Station. To help set the western atmosphere, music will be pro- vided by the Sting Rays, a local guitar group and Terry Hess from Fielding. Posse members and their wives in charge of the event this year are Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Gibbs and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gibbs,. Portage. Wednesday, building. Articles exhibited may be picked up at 9 p.m. Saturday night . Judging will start at 10 a.m., and the doors of the exhibition building will be closed to the public until after the judging is over. Baked item brought in after that hour will be accepted for exhibit i only. Winners will be able to collect their money anytime Thursday Friday or Saturday by going to the office in the exhibition must be in goods, Aug. 26, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Flowers do not need to be brought in until Thursday morning, Aug. 27. Matthews, Professor of Marketing and Research at the University of Utah, told the Bear River Valley Chamber of Commerce members at their annual summer meeting Thursday evening that Tremonton is ahead of most communities of their size and many larger ones in business activities and promotions of new business. He advised the members and others who should belong to the Chamber of Commerce to keep and ... supporting the working community in unity and they will find that progress will not StOP-46''- " '' f w Petty jealousies and group frictions can cost the community much of the gain in business life that has been made in the past, stated the speaker. He indicated that staying away from parking meters was good for local business. In his analysis of local parking problems, he said that expansion of Tremonton's business section to the side streets must be expected and planned for as the shortage of space on Main. Street- - will require sites for business on other streets. Mr. Matthews said he did not feel the completion of Interstate Highway, which will bypass Tremonton will seriously affect the town. It will affect a few types of businesses adversely, but also could make for better business in other lines, due to the easier access to parking within the city limits. The message was well received and appreciated by the 50 members and guests who were present. President Biil Waldron of the Box Elder County Fair also spoke to the group, praising them for their work in other years and asking for full cooperation this year. He told of the new improvements and program being made for a bigger and better fair again this year. Heavy timbered bleachers are installed on steel, 3 framework, and a complete sound system is part of the permanent improvement. Bill Waldron and Reuben Baer are pleased with the black; top on the roads and parking area. Additional parking areas arie being provided to the north of the Exhibition building, with a new entrance and additional lighting facilities. The First District Court has released the names of 25 jurors selected from residents of Box Elder County to serve on jurys during the third term of court. Over Again On Burglary Count Two men accused of the March 22 burglary at the Got--, 'den Bowl have been bound over to First District court after they had forfieted $1500 bail eacn louowing a tegai mixup with their attorney. . Johnnie L. Rushton, 19, and Gary Wade Nelson, 20. both of Granger had appeared before Brigham City Judge ,Ve-No- y Christofferson in mid-Jul- y and had waived preliminary hearing. Judge Christofferson ordered the bail forfeited when they failed to appear later on the charges. Last week Rushton and Nel- son appeared before the court and asked that the bail be re- - over to them First District Court be effected. They claimed they had not authorized their attorney, Phil Hansen, to with- draw their waiver. The court complied and the two will now face arraignment in First District court ' . William Storrer Appointed to William F. Storrer, Tremonton, Utah, has been named to serve as a County Committee- man for the Farmers Home Administration, according to Ronald W. Robbins the agencey's county supervisor. The appointment is for three years beginning July 1, 1964. The purpose of the county committee is to review applications for FHA loans. Composed of three members, the Committee is set up on a rotation tasis with one new member from various areas of the county appointed each year. Mr. Storrer succeeds Thyres R.
