Show THE LEADER. Tremonlon. Utah County Agents Column Lice, Mites are Robbers of Poultry Profit j r Poultrymen, are lice and mites making big cuts in your production and profits? They are in many Utah poultry houses now. Now is a good time to check your birds, nests and roosts for lice and mites before they eat into your dollars. Lice are found at the base of a bird's feathers and are rarely found anywhere except on the chicken itself. t Mites, hawever, can be found in cracks, beneath perch poles, on mash hoppers and in similar places where they may hide during the day. They come out at night and feed on the birds. These little pests prey upon the birds for their entire diet and cause irritation, nervousness and lower vitality in the birds. The chickens become weakened and go off feed. If the mites persist, they will cause great loss in eggs and meat. Mites and lice are quite easily controlled, if insecticides and sanitary methods are properly used. Many products on the market and many recommendations offer control. However, both pests can generally be controlled by spraying a lindane solution on the roosts and litters. One-hapint of 20 percent lindane emulsion to one gallon of water is sufficient. If the poultryman does a thorough job, one application will be effective for about three months. lf The Russ Waldron and Eddie Everyone is invited to attend.
