London. The Imperial conference wound up Tuesday, and if the attending colonial premiers spoke out their feelings to the public as they did to their acquaintances, they would call it a failure. A more dejected group of statesmen seldom has been seen. Coming with trade high hopes of a preferential scheme and elaborate programs for they have imperialistic legislation, succeeded in pressing upon the government only a few minor projects. The popular interest in the gathering, which at first was widespread, dwindled steadily until at the end the doings of the conference have been given but a secondary place in the press. Socially the conference was a great success, and the visiting pre miers have eaten many dinners. Sir Wilfrid Uaurier, the Canadian premier, supported the government at every stage of the opposition to prefer ential trade, and as a result he has become unpopular with his colleagues. Orders to Buy Pouring in From All Over the United States, In the most sensational Chicago. opening in the history of the Chicago board of trade, wheat on Monday shot past the dollar mark. Heavy realizing sales pushed the price backward somewhat, but at the close the market was strong and, according to the majority of speculators on the board, the demand upon which the late advance has been made is still unsatisfied. The net advance for wheat was 4 cents for the July and September options and 4Vh cents for the December. From the low point of Monday of last July wheat has advanced 13 cents. September has gone up 15 cents and in the December option, the highest point of the day was 1G cents above the low price of the previous Monday. It was a certainty that a strong bulge would take place in the wheat market at the opening. County orders had been poured in, seemingly in an endless stream, and in obedience to them brokeis stood ready to buy millions of bushels at the market. Shorts were in a highly nervous condition and were eager to cover. The result was that .as soon as the gong sounded there was a terrific roar of voices, all anxious to buy and nobody offering to sell. The rush of buying orders seemed to come from almost every city in the United States which was situated along a telegraph wire. They came from Winnipeg and from Louisiana, and from points on the Pacific and Atlantic seaboards. Family of the Accused Man in the Court Room at the Opening Session, Which Was Unmarked by Unusual Incident. Boise, Idaho. Thursday, 3 May the opening day of the trial of William D. Haywood, the first to be placed on trial of the alleged participants in the avenging conspiracy by which it is averred the assassination of Frank Steunenberg was plot ted and executed, was unmarked by unusual incident. It was earnest and business-like- . Its striking feature was the entire absence of crowds or demonstration in any form. At no time, morning or afternoon, was the courtroom more than half filled, and the streets forming the courthouse square contained not a single loiterer. The case was halted shortly before bean 5 o'clock, adjournment no until and taken Monday, ing Juror was secured, but substantial progress was made. Mr. Haywood was brought into the court room sharp at 10 o'clock in the morning. He found bis family in at line of chairs to the right of his seat, and in fiont were all of his counsel. He devoted more attention to his youngest daughter than to any one else, and throughout the day took prac of tically no part in the selection jurors. Many men in similar jeopardy, as a rule, make close study of their prospective jurors, and frequently express their personal preferences, but Mr. Haywood seems content to leave the matter entirely in the hands of his lawyers. Haywood gave no sign of any feeling or emotion, but sat quietly throughout the day. Mrs. Haywood and the older daughter stood the ordeal of appearance in court very well, but the younger child cried after the examination of talesmen began. Mrs. Haywood and her children did not attend the afternoon session. The question of the defense took a much wider range than that of state, and its most striking feature dealt with the possible effect upon the minds and attitudes of jurors of the letter of President Roosevelt in calling Haywood and his associates citizens," the speeches in Idaho of Secretary Taft, the message of Governor Gooding to the legislature of Idaho, the speech in Boise of Senator Heyburn, and the action of the Idaho legislature in passing a resolution and appropriating money for of the three prisoners. The chief concern of the counsel for the state in the examination of talesmen, as indicated by their questions, was their attitude toward circumstantial evidence, the absence of the accused from the state when the crime was committed, the effect of the manner in which the prisoner and his companions were brought from Colorado, views of the talesmen as to the death penalty for murder in the first degree and union labor. They also questioned each talesman as to his acquaintance with the murdered governor, with a view to disclosing friendship or en- - te mity Judge Wood announced that he intended to give both sides a wide latitude in the examination of talesmen. He also showed a willingness to grant challenges where there seemed any reasonable objection to the attitude of the talesman, and in the one contest of the day he ruled with the defense, which had challenged the talesman, and was resisted by the state. Lawyers of Boise not connected in any way with the case, but who know as much as is known of what both sides expect to do, say that after the jury is secured the trial of the ca? ought to be over in wo weeks. Judge. to waste no Fremont Wood time and another adjournment is not. looked for. The court will sit from 10 a. m. to noon and from 2 to 6 p. m., and sometimes until 6 o'clock, with one long session on Saturdays. Several members of the Western Federation of Miner, who are now in Boise watching the progress of the case, do not join in the belief existent in some quarters that Orchard Will refuse to testify. They believe that, he will make his statement upon the stand. On all side- - there is a question as to how far Orchard will be allowed to go in his statement which, It is alleged, implicates Haywood, Moyer and Pettibone. It is around this evidence that the whole case undoubtedly will move. exi-nct- of Seattle Lawyer Found Near-LonBeach Bathing Resort. Long Beach, Cal. A floating body supposed to be that of T.
