At a general conference held In Oct. 1883. Elder John Jaques was sustained as assistant church historian. Elder Charles W Penrose was sustained as church historian at a church conference in e Recorders.. 1830-189- 8 The office of Church Recorder was provided by direct revelation given April 6, 1830 immediately after the organization of the Church, in the revelation the Lord says. ."Behold there shall be a record kept First amoung you. D&C 21-recorder was Oliver Cowdery, appointed by Joseph Smith the Prophet March 8, 1831, John Whitman was called to be the LDS Church Historian. John Whitman move to Missouri in 1831 and he was unable to attend to his duties as Historian & Recorder. Sept. 8, 1835. ' Oliver Cowdery was again appointed as recorder and historian. At a conference of the Church held in the Kirtland Temple Sept. 1837, Geo W. Robinson was elected as General Church Recorder and Historian.. At a General Conference in April 1838 John Correll and Elias Higbee were appointed church historians to write and keep church history. Geo W. Robinson was sustained as general church recorder for the First Presidency. John Correll apostatized and was excommunicated from the church in March 1830. Elias Higbee had other callings and was unable to fill his duties as church historian. At a general conference held 1840 Robert B. Thompson was appointed as general church clerk in place of Geo W. Robinson who moved to Iowa. Edward Thompson entered upon the duties of his office. He took sick and died in Aug. 1841. At a general conference in 1841, James Sloan was elected general church clerk. At a special meeting held July 1843, Elder Willard Richards was appointed general church recorder. James Sloan left Nauvoo on a mission to Ireland. Eider Richards was appointed" by Joseph Smith to act as recorder for the Temple ans also a private secretary and general clerk to the Prophet. He entered immediately upon the duties of his office and continued until June 1842. Here he turned the business of his office over to Wm Clayton and left Nauvoo for the New England States. In Oct. 1842 Elder Richards was again appointed a private secretary and historian, while Wm Clayton as Temple was retained Recorder and clerk of the Prophets temperal business. At a general conference in Oct. 1845 President Brigham Young, Elder Richards was sustained to the office of church historian and general church recorder. Since that time the double office of church historian and general church recorder has been vested in the same person. At a general conference in April 1854 George A. Smith was chosen ans sustained as church historian and general church recorder. As the church grew the labors of the church historian increased and it became necessary to appoint assistants to the church historians.
