It was so hot we were glad to get on our way back to Utah to again feel cool weather. At that time we had never heard of "Scotty's Castle" or "Death Valley Scolly" who had became the greatest legend of that area. He ran away when he was a young boy from his home in Kentucky to join his brother on a ranch in Nevada. He also worked in Death Valley, a place he loved. He also worked on many other jobs but decided he wanted to go prospecting for gold. He convinced several wealthy business men that he had a claim to a gold mine worth a fortune in Death Valley. Scotty's most stead fast investor was an insurance magnet, Albert Johnson, who gave thousands of dollars over athe next several years. Mr. Johnson finally decided to take a look at the gold mine. He came west and Scotty took him by horse back through the valley. He loved Death Valley so much because of the dry sunny climate and he had taken a liking to the little old desert rat. He found riches in the desert far greater than ones that glitter. The two men became life-lon- g friends. Johnson often came to Death Valley and decided to bring his wife to see it. They decided to build a home there. Scotty often told everyone he was building a two million dollar home from his profits of the gold mine. It was a beautiful mansion and they called it "Scotty's Castle". It was finally willed to him when the Johnsons died in 1940. Thousands come back each year where it has been a tourist This is a letter in praise of MiHred Yardiey The many articles she writes for the paper are very interesting and informative.
